Are custom labels bad for your player?
Hi all,
Are DIY sticker labels bad for your DVD player/drive? I'm thinking of making some for discs of home movies and photo discs, but I had heard (can't remember where though) that the paper was bad for the player.
Do you have ideas on this? Thanks.

The thing is - for as many people that respond here and say that they're awful and the labels ruined their player, you'll get just as many who say they've never had a problem.
I, myself, have never had a problem. I have labeled every one of my home-made DVDs and never experienced any trouble, whatsoever.
Your experience, however, may vary greatly.

From what I have read else where it seems that The following effect the use of labels on DVD+/-R/RW disc's:
[A] It is based on the player..
[B] "PAPER"
Do not use 'GLOSSY' stock..
Do not use "FULL COVER" stock..
[C] Make sure that the label is centered and is bubble free...
[D] Allow printed image to stabilize [ink to dry, lazer to cool] before applying to disc.
[E] Do not get finger prints all over the recorded side while applying label.. [I personaly use a bad CD-R and hold it aginst the good side of the DVD I am lableing..]
I have burned and labeled over 50 DVD's and never had any troubles... other than twice.. one which I had tried to use Glossy stock with and the other one was a full disc label which covered up the hub of the disc...

But a lot depends on the player, and probably the media as well. If you're using cheap media to begin with, the chances are probably greater that it will be negatively affected by outside influences like a label.

I have three set-top boxes which I test on...and has to pass the test on all three boxes.. not just one.. and I use DVD+r/RW media... Everything from 'KHypermedia' from OfficeMax to three 'NAME BRAND' retail packages.

RCA N700
Emerson VHS.DVD Combo
Other than the RCA the other two are far from top of the line drives... the RCA was their top of the line drive at the time of purchase.... about a year ago.
