Ummm, I'll take this one. I personally would hold off on these. Its entirely possible that Fox will revisit these films with anamorphic prints and maybe even (dare we hope?) Cantonese audio tracks.
The current discs are basically just ported from the LDs, so they are nothing spectacular.

Fox has said time and again there are no plans to make new transfers for these, or the Planet of the Apes films either. At the price I've been seeing the Lee movies lately, $7 a pop, I say get them, and enjoy them to your heart's content. Stop torturing yourself.

And Cantonese soundtracks? Hey, I'd love to have 'em, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

Agree with cultshock. No anamorphic transfer = no sale.

Do pick up Enter The Dragon however...

The POTA SE due in Q1 of 2004 will have an anamorphic transfer per the early specs and rumor talk. It's entirely possible that the rest of the films in the series will follow in due time...

Thats right, and I can't wait.

Sorry, but I don't put much stock into what studios say about what will "never happen". Given time, they've contradicted themselves time and time again in the past, so I would never say "never". If studio execs suddenly smell money in a project, they will forget all about previous pronouncements. Also, Fox has seemed to have recently taken an interest in HK films as seen with their deal with Fortune Star. But yeah, the current discs are cheap enough to buy now and toss when something better comes along. (or get an all region player and get the R2 HKL discs of some of these films).

Yep POTA is official and coming Feb 7th next year.

From videobusiness.com :

OCT. 22 | The planet will once again be ruled by dirty apes Feb. 7 when Fox Home Entertainment releases a 35th anniversary edition of the original Planet of the Apes.

The double-disc special edition (prebook Jan. 7; $26.98) features a new behind-the-scenes documentary on the movie, Roddy McDowall home movies, movie dailies and outtakes and three never-before-seen featurettes made in the late 1960s.

The late McDowall, who played the chimp scientist, gives a commentary with actors Natalie Trundy and Kim Hunter, composer Jerry Goldsmith, makeup artist John Chambers and Eric Greene, who wrote a book on the mythology of the film.

Fox also packed on 1968 film reviews, a movie timeline and an Easter Egg.

Actor Charlton Heston, who announced last year he has Alzheimer's disease, was not involved in the making of the DVD.

Fox's 2001 DVD release of the film included no bonus features.

For $30, the box set is worth it.
