The Alamo
I think the Alamo trailer looks pretty good. Solid cast. Good movie based on a real event.
Do we think this is going to be more like Gettysburg [historically accurate] or Pearl Harbor [American history hidden behind romantic subplot]?

Historically accurate? Let's think about that for a minute... a buncha Texans died, and a buncha Mexicans died. The only ambiguity in that is portraying the characteristics of the main players. If they protray one of the Mexican lieutenants as scowling and hateful, and one of the Texans as standing tall and virtuous and all, how do you know that it's historically inaccurate? If they showed the Texan as scowling and hateful and the Mexican as standing tall and virtuous and all, it's still all made up... it is no more historically accurate. The only facts we have is that a buncha people died on either side, the Mexicans won the battle, and lost the war. That's it.
Having said that, the only thing I've heard about the film was that it was from the Mexicans' point of view. If that's the case, I don't think anyone needs to worry about the producers villifying the Mexicans, which is what people are really concerned about, I think, when they question the historical accuracy. It's not historical accuracy people want these days, it's political correctness.
The fact is that you've got to be pretty bloodthirsty and savage to slaughter countless people... and that goes for both the Mexicans and the Texans. There is no good and bad at the Alamo, only a story of incredible conflict. The Texans are heroes not because they were virtuous and the Mexicans were 'evil', they're heroes simply because they lasted so long against incredible odds.
In all my life as a Texan, I've never looked upon the Mexican army as 'evil', but I certainly did and do look at Crocket, Davis, Bowie, et. al. as heroes simply because they went down fighting for a cause they believed in... not because they were 'better' than the Mexicans.
Anyway, whatever. I'll probably get blasted for this, but damn it all, that's how I look at it.

Ah, so this thread really isn't about The Alamo at all. Oops, pardon my rant.
And actually, javanut, pardon my rant f'real, since you're concern points more to historical accuracy vs. Hollywood Cookie-cutter Syndrome, rather than political correctness vs. historical accuracy. Forgive me for taking liberty with your actual question and going off topic with it.

Sorry I started a duplicate thread.
My thought on accuracy was actually more about the details, and then Crockett's death. If I'm not mistaken, some historians believe Crockett died in the alamo, while others believe he was captured and then later killed.
And I liked the rant, Mutley Hyde.

Aw thanks! I didn't expect that kinda reaction.
As for Crockett, I'm not very sure about the specifics either. I have picked up the book Three Roads to the Alamo, which I believe came out in '97 or so. I wanna try to read that before the movie comes out, but at the rate that I read, the sequal, "Goliad", will be out already.
