How do you BAN someone without banning their IP??
as a new vbull admin, i'm wondering what steps the admins here take when banning a user - WITHOUT banning their IP.. i'm having problems on my forum with a couple of AOL users, and i can't ban their IP, because it would affect all AOL users on the forum...

There are various stages of banning that can lead up to a total IP ban, and the IP ban in cases of dynamic IPs may impact other users.
But unless they are persistent, why ban the IP? Just ban the user.
See your admin CP.

Bring up the page of the user you want to ban, and under member status you should have the options of banned and suspended, among others. Just choose banned and apply the changes.
It can be a very satisfying thing to do too!

here's what i got:
users > all users > (go to user) edit > user group (is this the correct drop-down box?) >
but then my selections are:
(COPPA) users...
admins
mods
registered
super mods
unregistered/not logged in
users awaiting email conf.
i would imagine that's where it should be, but am i still looking in the wrong place?

I don't have access to the control panel anymore, so I'm relying on memory here.
That does sound like it...are you looking at a specific member, or a group of them? I've only done bannings one at a time. I'd either do a search for the member in the control panel, or use the Admin. Options link in their Profile to bring up their page.
It may be that you need to setup "banned" as a selectable member status. Geoff handled the main settings of the forum software, so I can't really help you there.

There should be a "find user" function under the control panel that will let you enter a user's name and take you to their edit screen. You can select their user group there.

You just don't have the suer group BANNED created.
You can set up your own custom user group. Call it BANNED or SUSPENDED or SUPREME BUTTHEAD.
Then modify that user group to not have forum permissions to reply, or start threads. Allowing them to read threads is an option.
Once the user group is created, you can modify users to be a part of that new group. It's like filing!

I have a problem with AOL users as well.
Thanks to AOL's proxy system, there's no way to ban an AOL user's IP address without affecting other users.
Sure, you can ban the user name but they always end up coming right back and causing more trouble. A guy on my board has been banned about 15 times already but because he has an AOL addy, he just keeps coming back.
Every now and then I'll bust out the Class C IP bans and take out a whole range of IPs. Fun stuff.

Just apply the "Miserable User" hack for vBulletin....it's so much better than banning. Makes no page images load, the text is all messed up, and pages take ages to load. So cruel, yet so fun.
