How bad is the cropping on the R2 THEY LIVE DVD?

Okay, so I just found out that all of the R2 releases of John Carpenter's THEY LIVE use the same transfer which is cropped from 2.35 to 2.10. Now, of course, that's bad, very bad, as Carpenter, is a master of widescreen composition. However, I really that commentary, which only appears on the R2 releases..

So, can anyone tell me just how badly the movie suffers from having its edges trimmed off?

I saw a comparison somewhere on the web a few months ago and have been trying to find it for a while. If anyone knows where it is (a direct comparison between R1 and R2 that shows the cropping), please let us both know.

Somebody on this board must own it... I'm just looking for a quick, "yes, the cropping was distracting" or a "Cropping? Huh? Looked fine when I watched it!?"

Anyone?

I own the R2, and have watched the newer R1 re-issue. To be honest, I probably never would've noticed the cropping if not for reading about it on here a couple of months ago. So, basically, no, it doesn't bother me.

Was the R2 Prince of Darkness cropped as well?

That's what I hoped to hear. Now I've got the greenlight to send more money to Europe! Woo-hoo!

Thanks for the link, DonnachaOne, especially because it has pics. I still wish I could find the site/page with the numerous screenshots from the R1 vs. R2 releases. I'm all about OAR, but I'm tempted to pick up the R2 release of They Live anyway. However, I don't see the point in owning it and the R1. Seems silly to me to own two copies of the same film. *shrug*

Thanks DonnachaOne. I actually did a search, but with words as common as "They" and "Live" I got a ton of hits. Not knowing if there actually was a thread there to find, I only looked at threads as far back as early-August, before giving up. To quote Maxwell Smart: "Missed it by that much!"

Definetily pick up the r2 version, even if you're going to get the r1. The audio commentary is worth it.
