Question about Gibson's character in Signs
He was a Catholic priest, right? Sooo ... why'd he have a wife and kids?
(It's possible I'm not up to date on Catholicism.)

there were people who actually watched signs? You figure everyone knows the twist ending is that the aliens see dead people.

He wasn't a Catholic priest. I don't believe the denomination is actually discussed - the only (exclusively?) Catholic practice I can think of is that he is asked to hear a girl's sins.
Perhaps he became a priest after the children were born, which would make him a Deacon rather than a priest (Deacon's get called Priest and Father - I don't know if it's correct that it happens, though)... though the kids' ages don't correspond with that idea.
My theory is is that he's a non-catholic christian priest/minister, and (Catholic) M. Night Shyamalan wrote the character to reflect the religious figures he had grown up with.
I hope that's a joke, otherwise that's a very hateful, indecent and ignorant thing to say. Let's not turn the thread into a church-bashing thread.

I don't know if it was mentioned, but he appeared to be Episcopalian. There are Catholic priests who are married and have kids, but it's a rare situation (married clergy who convert).

that said, I guess one has to decide which is more "hateful"... a church who's leaders support said activity via moving these sickos around and covering up for them once the law is onto them, or some guy in a dvd forum noting the fact. People can do whatever they want, you can all be satan worshipers for all I care... but I know when i go to see "the man" I dont want the above activity on my resume...

Well, there are Catholic themes throughout all his films, so it's still a valid observation. Apparently he just doesn't happen to be a Catholic himself.
