Top 15 Movies...

Alright, i am sure this has been done before, but i searched and couldnt find anything. Regardless, I am sure opinions have changed as new movies have been viewed. I believe the views expresed in this thread can turn people onto new movies that they might not have otherwise been. Shared knowledge helps things.

And as far as top, I am talking your top 15. So it doesnt have to be groundbreaking movies in the historical sense, but movies that were powerful to you.

My list was very hard to do for me, btw. And probably is still not exact. Also, for reference, here are some widely considered classics that I have not seen, so they had no baring on my list: 8 1/2, The Third Man, Seven Samuria (although i own it), Gone with the Wind, Clockwork Orange, and the Seventh Seal (im sure there are more though).

My List
1. Magnolia
2. The Bridge on River Kwai
3. Braveheart
4. The Matrix
5. American Beauty
6. Muholland Dr.
7. Good Will Hunting
8. Casablanca
9. 2001
10. Doctor Zhivago
11. Snow White
12. Punch-Drunk Love
13. Toy Story 2
14. Gladiator
15. Monty Python and the Quest for the Holy Grail

Honorable Mentions: Waking Life (I wanted to get it in there, but repeat viewings just dont hold up like the rest of the group), Moulin Rouge (Enchanting, but dont know if it has the substance), and Amelie. Plus im sure i will think of something else i missed.

Lots of good lists so far, here's mine:

15. Goodfellas (Scorcese)- the definitive modern gangster pic, great dialogue, great characters and an epic script.
14. Hidden Fortress (Kurosawa)- adventure par excellance, Mifune charging on horseback, the inspiration for Star Wars, my personal favorite Kurosawa.
13. Psycho (Hitchcock)- polished like a diamond, every shot in this film is perfect from the deliberately cheesy sets to the deliberately B-actor casting, to the way you want that car to sink out of sight, this movie is the template for modern horror.
12. The Secret Garden (Holland)- unbelievably beautiful, works for people of all ages and completely cutesy free, this is my favorite "kids" movie.
11. Kind Hearts and Coronets (Hamer)- the blackest comedy I've seen, this movie captures arch British wryness in a way unequaled until the Smiths wrote "This Charming Man".
10. LOTR:FOTR EE(Jackson)- the best adventure movie I've seen, every time I watch it (especially in extended form) it gets better.
9. Pulp Fiction (Tarantino)- amazing script, benchmark dialogue, filmaking mastery...what else is there to say?
8. Spirited Away (Miyazaki)- surprisingly deep contemplation on modern Japan, modern children and the environment, it's also one of the most beautiful movies I've seen.
7. Tampopo (Itami)- the most inventive and hilarious comedy I've seen, it's also completely unique.
6. Toy Story 2 (Lasseter)- a complete modern masterpiece from beginning to end, the script works, the themes resonate, even the song is terrific.
5. The Godfather (Coppola)- some movies have "good parts", this one is all "good parts".
4. The Wild Bunch (Peckinpaw)- William Holden is the baddest ass of all film bad asses and this film is my favorite "guy movie", it defines machismo.
3. Back to the Future (Zemeckis)- Total entertainment, tight direction, lots of fun to watch.
2. ET (Spielburg)- Pure storytelling genius, I have never met anyone who didn't like it.
1. Chungking Express (Wong)- my favorite ending in any movie. Puts me in a good mood anytime I watch it, it's probably my favorite movie...today.

From my YMDB list.

1. Godfather: Part II, The (1974) - The classic. I think its a tiny bit better than the first one, but its just amazing story telling and acting.
2. Godfather, The (1972) - The original. Brando is great, and I love Sonny in this one. Tough to put this as my second favorite.
3. Scarface (1983) - This movie has effected me greatly (and I don't rap ) Pacino's performance is the best I've ever seen and it's nearly flawless from beginning to end. Amazing score and acting.
4. Pulp Fiction (1994) - Definitiely grew on me. From a cinematic point of view, its genius. Very compelling, and excellent use of music as well.
5. Fight Club (1999) - I swear to God this movie gets better with every viewing. And I've seen it abou 10 times so far. Love it, and the DVD. This may be my favorite one day, who knows.
6. Rock, The (1996) - Best mix of action, and story I've ever seen. Nic Cage and Sean Connery are great together. And that car chase...it'll never get old.
7. Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, The (2002) - After a repeat viewing I fell in love with this one. Can't wait for the EE. Unbelievable story-telling, cinematography and of course action. Very cool stuff.
8. Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991) - Not as effective as it used to be, but one of my favorirtes when it came out. Classic Arnold and Cameron.
9. Matrix, The (1999) - A damn good flick, with some amazing acting and cinematography. The effects ain't as good as they used to be.
10. Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, The (2001) - Besides being a little slow at points, definitely one of the better movies ever. All around.
11. Dumb & Dumber (1994) - STILL the funniest movie I've ever viewed. Funny to this damn day. I'll never forget seeing it theatres for the first time. I nearly had a heart attack.
12. Back to the Future Part II (1989) - Riveting, fun, great story-telling. Always loved the beginning future scenes in this one.
13. Back to the Future (1985) - Very good in its own right. Always loved it.
14. Usual Suspects, The (1995) - Spacey is the man. Great cast, and of course the amazing script.
15. Goodfellas (1990) - Best modern mob movie.

Great descriptions also, lists are boring, but knowing why you like you top 15 and writing it is a great addition.

1. 2001: A Space Odyssey
2. Vertigo
3. Goodfellas
4. Pinochio
5. Stalker (Tarkovsky)
6. Seven Samurai
7. The Seventh Seal
8. Brazil
9. It's Always Fair Weather
10. She Wore a Yellow Ribbon
11. Sunset Blvd.
12. Mullholland Dr.
13. Repo Man
14. The Red Shoes
15. Rosemary's Baby

Edit: I write all this and then realise that I've completely excluded two of my favorite directors: David Cronenberg and Wong Kar Wei. It just goes to show how fickle taste is and how no list of mearly 15 films could encapsulate one's tastes.

1. Rain Man...Still the greatest road movie of all time, and the scene where Charlie teaches Raymond to dance in Vegas always gets me a little misty. It's funny, too.
2. Unforgiven...I've never seen a better Western, or seen a better performance, in any movie, than Eastwood's in this flick. The mood and every performance is note-perfect. The most deserving Best Picture winner of all time.
3. Lost in Translation...Seen it twice in the theaters, and might see it again. A slight film that knocks me over. Great performances by Johannsen and Murray. The Casablanca of a new generation. Has the feeling of, "Of all the Japanese hotel lounges, in all the world..."
4. Pulp Fiction...Good, flashy fun. Violence as broad comedy and dime store philosophy. Great.
5. Se7en...The absolute darkest movie ever made. Darker than M, Night of the Hunter, and The Silence of the Lambs combined. Fantastic, puch-in-the-gut, non-formulaic ending.
6. Fargo...Ugly people with ugly accents doing ugly things in the snow. Reminds me of Syracuse. Has the best score and cinemetography of any film on my list.
7. The Bicycle Thief...The best single scene ever shot is the man and his boy standing in the rain, after a day of lost hope and hurting feet.
8. Notorious...Marriage as a spy gadget. My favorite Hitchcock film.
9. There's Something About Mary...has the Farrelys at the top of there game, a great cast, non-PC humor, and a sweet heart. Compulsively watchable.
10. Ed Wood...The worst director of all time deserves, and gets one great one. For my money, the best film about film.
11. Clockers and 25th Hour...Spike Lee's two statements about second chances, and life and how (not) to live it. Mature, well-developed films that are definitively Spike, minus the shrillness.
12. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre...phew. I'm glad the transfer sucks. There's nothing about this film that should ever be polished. I like it how I first saw it. Sitting alone, on a cold night, with my VCR processing a dark, overworn tape.
13. Minority Report and Catch Me if You Can...have nothing in common except a director and the year of release. Both great in their own right, both representing the versitality and freshness of Spielberg's vision.
14. Clerks...is barely, as Kevin Smith says, even a movie. Funny as hell, and I've never gotten tired of watching it, from my two VHS copies to the DVD (one of my first). Randall still cracks me up, and I think the comedy, mood, and look really captures the "alternative nation" spirit.
15. Full Metal Jacket and Paths of Glory...War is Hell. Bureaucracy is worse.

...and the docs...
1. Gimme Shelter
2. Startup.com
3. Hoop Dreams
4. Salesman
5. Lost in La Mancha
6. Roger & Me
7. Spellbound
8. Hype!
9. The War Room
10. Ken Burns' Baseball & The Civil War
