Hong Kong Flicks - Shaw Brothers Quality
Anyone have any idea of the quality of the Shaw Brothers films advertised on the front page of DVD talk? I've recently purchased "Five Deadly Venoms" from Ebay and I was disappointed. Just curious if these transfers are any better? Thanks...

I have a bunch of these and they are pretty bad. It's probably a transfer from a VHS tape + it's dubbed. The old saying "you get what you pay for" applies here.
But for $5, give them a try if you can't wait.

Most of these are transfers from shows taped off tv... back in the 80's
But I do own most of them. For nostalgia.
I'm sure with Celestial releasing new prints of the old Shaw Bros movies and Miramax becoming the US distributor, these are going to go away as quickly as they can.

Pretty poor quality bootlegs. The Ground Zero collection comes from George Tan's vhs collection of various tv prints. Many are edited as they are from European prints with english dubs spliced in around the editing. As it stands, they are about the only way you'll be able to see the films with their english dubtracks, and many of the titles are a long way off from being released by Celestial. That said, there isn't a single title which is remotely comparable to the Celestial releases in terms of actual quality. The english dubs, are however, classic.
