Looking for suggestions for little known fright flicks
I love this time of year and usually go on a horror movie binge in October but I'm tired of watching the same old things. What are some suggestions for fright flicks that most people may not know about? Skip the Evil Dead Trilogy, The Changeling and stuff like that, flicks that are staples in many peoples' collections. I'm asking for independent movies and stuff like Session 9 - movies that are not common knowledge to movie buffs and mainstream horror fans. I prefer creepy atmosphere as opposed to "BOO!" scares & tons of gore, but will indulge in those at times.
Any suggestions?

Hmmm.... horror is a staple in my collection, but I think you mean to stay away from the overhyped/popular/well known type titles. Before this breaks down into people reccomending Evil Dead and The Ring, have you ever checked out any of the Italian horror flicks? A lot of little known/watched gems. Check out some of these titles and see if any are interesting:

Various sub genre links on the side. Here's another list of smaller movies:

Lastly, check out some of the new Drive In double featured DVDs from Anchor Bay that were just released. Most of them would be definitely be considered 'little known.'

If you could name some films that you've liked, and can use as a comparison for the types you'd like to see, I could probably be a bit more specific.

As for examples, I prefer movies that rely on atmosphere moreso than gore & BOO-scares to creep me out. Session 9 is a good example.

No. No. No. No. NO. NO. NO.
Skip "Black Christmas." After hearing so much about it here and elsewhere, I finally put the film in my Netflix queue just to see what all the fuss was about.
Let me tell you: it was all I could do to make it through this tired hack-fest. Yes, I realize that this film was a pre-cursor to the Jason / Freddy slasher flicks of today - but that doesn't excuse just how utterly unbearable the film is.
The pacing is glacial. The acting stiff. The scares negligible.
Skip it. I beg of you.

I'd recommend the original version of "The Haunting", based on "The Haunting of Hill House" story by Shirley Jackson. It's very subtle but effective, especially if you like ghosts instead of gore. And God in heaven, stay away from the Jan DeBont remake.
