MP3 Players: IPod or wait for the Karma..or maybe the Philips?
I want to get a large HD-based MP3 player in the next few months, looking at the 20 gig range.
The IPod looks cool, but it's MP3 and ACC only, also I think you have to send it in to replace the battery.
I think I prefer the upcoming Rio Karma: it's a little smaller than the IPod, supports FLAC (which kicks MP3's ass) and Ogg Vorbis, has a user serviceable battery and a few more features. I do have serious concerns about Rio's proprietary software package, it looks unstable.
There are plenty of other options either available now or soon: the Philips looks cool with a magnesium cover and lots of recording options, the Creative Zen NX is supposed to be pretty good, IRiver is (finally) coming out with a jukebox that promises to be great etc.
Any suggestions?

The iPod is great.
The Zen is great too.
Rio has had a good track record in the past. Provided that the Karma supports USB2.0 High Speed, or FireWire, I don't see any reason not to pick it.

For me: my exercise consists of blinking, so HD-based, here I come.

Creative Zen and the Karma are the better HD based mp3 players, not to start a flame war, but the sound quality is not stellar on Ipod, even with great headphones and high quality encodes. Not only that, the controls are too...how should I say...."innovative"
Other mp3 players have more traditional controls that can be easily fixed with basic electronics knoweldge, I suspect an Ipod would have to be rushed to Apple if ever defective

Well, actually, I'd say both.
Before using an Ipod, I expected super ismple and intelligent controls, at least as good as a good cd's player mode [simple buttons, with some neat programming features], but I just found it to be repulsive....knobs, buttons, and text work a lot better for me.

since it is HD based (which I had forgotten about) does it skip/get messed up with movement?

I went with the Zen 2.0 and loved it....till it broke. It was my fault though. I like the fact that it's so easy to transplant a larger HD into it (which I did, right before I broke it.)
This RIO Karma is looking cool though, I might get that next time.

Will Napster.com downloads play on my iPod?
Title says it all. Before I download the software, I'm wondering if the downloaded songs will be captive on my PC or if I can sync them to the iPod.

Go download iTunes
No, Napster has decided to use the WMP format for their downloads. If you want the best downloadable music for your iPod, download iTunes for Windows and enjoy!
Believe me, you won't even miss Napster after 5 minutes.
Enjoy!
