Today's CDs (9/19)
The hurricane, surprisingly enough, hit us very hard. What with all the totalled cars, branches, and lack of power (until recently, obviously), it's been a bizarre day. So, I've kept with me:
Animal Collective, Here Comes the Indian
Wolf Eyes, Dead Hills + Mugger + Dread
Polysics, Neu!
The Hidden Cameras, The Smell Of Our Own
Yume Bitsu, The Golden Vessyl of Sound
Enon, Hocus Pocus

Guess I'll bump my own and hope I actually get some more commentors...
Today:
Yume Bitsu, Golden Vessyl of Sound and Auspicious Winds
Kaada, Thank You For Giving Me Your Valuable Time
Sleater Kinney, Dig Me Out
Parts and Labor, Groundswell
Pere Ubu, The Modern Dance
Black Dice, Beaches and Canyons
Wolf Eyes, Dread
and a mixtape I made for my friend that you can see the tracklist to here. Hardly a stupendous mix, but it's keeping both of us very entertained.
-edit to add-
And how about a QoTD? Okay. Tell us something about the mixes you make. Are they mainly for yourself or other people? Do you work on themes or just flow? You know, just general stuff.
I make most of my tapes for friends; Marie, the girl that got the latest mix, gets the largest number of them. Generally, I try to give her something that goes through lots of different moods, tones, etc within a small level of tracks. I haven't really made a theme-mix, aside from this terribly precious Christmas mix I distributed last year. It makes me cringe to think about it.
-edit again-
I'm also going to start making mixtapes of my favorite songs of the year. Depending on how good the rest of the year is, I may end up making several for 2k3.

Glad to see you got Parts & Labor, fallow. You like?
I just got back from a two-week vacation (from my no-work vacation), and while I was gone I was obsessed with:
A Frames -- 2
Justin Timberlake -- Justified
Mary J Blige -- "Love @ 1st Sight"
Matthew Dear -- [whatever the title is, I forget right now]
Also, the new OutKast is SO TERRIBLE! I'm hella disappointed.
Also, the new Hella (check that segue!) EP is fantastic. Maybe the best thing they've done.

Yeah, this Parts and Labor disc is really, really wonderful. I've had an overload of great music this year, so I don't know if I like it more than some others. We'll see in December.
And I'm going to see Hella on Thursday night. Can't wait. I'll probably pick up the EP there.
I don't know about the rest of the Outkast disc, but "Hey Ya" is a blast of a song.
-edit-
Oh yeah, and today I'm listening to these:
Parts and Labor, Groundswell
Fennesz, Endless Summer
M83, Dead Cities, Red Seas and Lost Ghosts
Q and Not U, Book of Flags EP
Manitoba, Up In Flames
Tujiko Noriko, Make Me Hard + From Tokyo to Naiagara
I don't know what's up with my taste in music lately. This whole week I've wanted to listen to noisier, more abstract artists; hence, lots of Wolf Eyes, Black Dice, Animal Collective, Fennesz and Tujiko Noriko.

Hella's up there with 90 Day Men and Calla as my favorite live acts. Make sure you get up close, fallow. Zach has to be seen to be believed (and you still won't).
Re: OutKast -- I dunno. I got sent a promo a couple of weeks ago, and while there are great tracks (Hey Ya, She Lives in My Lap, Ghettomusick), Andre's forced ecclecticism rings really, really hollow. Some of the songs sound like stuff I recorded when I was 14 -- first stabs at writing rock music that essentially employ every convention. But cuz it's Andre, he tries to f**k with it, and it ends up as a mess. I dunno. He wants to be Prince, but he doesn't have Prince's talent. I like the Big Boi disc MUCH MUCH more. Maybe this week I'll try to trim the thing to a solid 12-track disc (which it's capable of being).

Lost power on Friday 2am due to Isabel, been mostly at the movies, not listening to CDs
got some CD-Singles in the mail last week and listened to them in the car
Supergrass - Rush Hour Soul (great instrumental b-side, title track however is not the best song of the latest album
Radiohead - Go To Sleep (UK single: CD1)
Grandaddy - El Camirino in the West - has a great 'live' semi-acoustic version of "Now It's On"
Hey fallow: how is The Hidden Cameras: The Smell Of Our Own been meaning to buy it on one positive review, but would like to hear what you think.
Oh and Yancey, saw a pic of you in the Otter forum.

Bruce Springsteen - The Rising
Tift Merritt - Bramble Rose
Kelly Willis - What I Deserve
Miles Davis - Kind of Blue
George Winston - Winter Into Spring
AOTD: I haven't made a mixtape for, I don't know, 6-7 years? I don't have a CD burner (and making an actual mix tape seems kinda cheesy), which explains why...
