Monty Python: Meaning Of Life se/Flaw/fix

Theres been much concern over this the just released special edition. The problem is that some consumers are experiencing jagged video when they view . I contacted Universal directly and the following is there response which should be very commendable on their part. They acknowledge the problem and are willing to rectify it.

Thank you for contacting Universal Studios. With the advent of cutting-edge
technology in the DVD format, a small number of DVD players do not have the
technical capability to take full advantage of the "Monty Python's The
Meaning of Life" disc format. Universal Studios Home Video has become aware
of a player specific issue which results in the appearance of jagged video
interlacing, on disc 1 only. Disc 2 is NOT affected. Consumers with an
incompatible player may mail back Disc 1 to Universal and receive a
replacement. To obtain a pre-paid USPS envelope in which to mail back the
original Disc 1, please call 1-800-433-4673. Replacement discs are currently
scheduled to be available mid-November 2003.
We appreciate your patronage and hope you continue to enjoy our products.
Sincerely,
Universal Studios Home Video

Thanks for the heads-up. I love how they pass the back onto the DVD players, though...

I guess all of my dvd players have got a problem then, I didn't know about it tell now. We should be all thanking Universal Studios for letting us all know that our state of the art dvd players has got a fault.

God knows it's not them.

We should all contact our DVD player manufactures right away.

If the player is incompatible, how does getting a new disk change that fact? Unless they're changing something on their end, which that email does not state.
Yeah, some DVD players can't take advantage of the DVD format. O-kay.

Another site said it was a flagging problem only in progressive-scan players. Universal seems to be saying it's older players. Which is it? I have a progressive-scan player & watched on a 65" HDTV & didn't see any problem? If newer players are okay, I guess I don't have to return it?

Maybe some players are ok, but none of my electronics are anything but old. My dvd player in my computer shows this program clearly and my HDTV using all monster cable with a new progressive scan dvd player shows the problem too. it's a Pioneer elite DV-45A connected up to a Sony 47" HDTV, I used my old Sony 550 none progressive and the problem still didn't go away.

The fact is over the hundreds of dvds I already own, been collecting since 98. All of them don't even do this. I just don't buy what Universal is saying. so I sent a email, to Pioneer and Sony online. Plus I replied to Universal asking them what the problem was because I am sure that Pioneer would love to know about this program with there players. hehe

I wasn't born yeasterday and if you guys are having the same problem I recommend you do the same, that will show them for not giving us a more clear anwer.

Reply from Universal...

Thank you for contacting us. This issue is not specific to Progressive Scan players. There is no need to contact the manufacturer.

We appreciate your patronage and hope you continue to enjoy Universal releases.

Sincerely,

Anyone get the mailer?

Hey folks,

Did anyone receive the mailer that Universal is supposed to be sending out so we can ship disk one back for replacement?

Not yet. Friday will be four weeks since I called, and I haven't gotten a thing.

I found this thread on page 420

Got my replacement disc last week. I have not had the chance to pop it in and check it out yet, but I received an interesting letter today from Universal- I am quoting the important part below:

Re: Monty Python's Meaning of Life" DVD replacement

Please disregard the replacement version 2 disc for "Monty Python's Meaning of Life" you recently received. A new updated version will be sent to you shortly.

I see on Deep Discount DVD that TMoL has got a lower price point and a 'release date' of 01/06/04. Is this just a price drop, or are they perhaps sending out new batches with the fixed disk?

I read elsewhere that Universal is merely scheduling a price drop for January. Who knows if they will have even corrected the disc by then. Their first revision has apparently failed.

My new replacement disc came, UPS-2 day, last Thursday.

Looks like it's fixed...this is on a Denon DVD-2900, using mode 1, with a Sony KP53 in prog-scan.

Anybody care to venture what percentage of profits Universal lost on this?

Hey there,

I just scored Meaning Of Life SE the other day and I have noticed some of the problems reported on disk 1. I've read on dvdreview.com that the replacement disk showed no improvement
I was hoping to get a review on the new disk from anyone out there that has it.

Thanks,
jg

I got a "fixed" disk in the mail, then received a letter the next day saying that the problems were still on the replacements... A few days later, I got a 'newer' version that should have these problems corrected. Haven't watched it yet tho.
