Buying an Xbox, now I need advice...

Ok, with all the ESPN Hockey hoopla and praise going on, I decided to go ahead and pick up the game. Problem is, I have only a Gamecube and unfortunately, it's not on the system this year.

So it's either PS2 or Xbox. Since I had owned a PS2 previously, and got rid of all my games, I figured I'd take the Xbox plunge. I have always wanted to play online via Xbox Live anyway

Now, here is why I need advice...

Do I buy the Xbox at Wal-Mart and get Splinter Cell and Mech Assault free? Do I buy it at Best Buy and get not only Reward Zone points (probably about $8) but the $25 digital coupon that is available til midnight on the 13th? I wouldn't get the coupon until the end of October I guess, and who knows how long it takes to get the gift cards from Reward Zone.

There is also the refurb/used option, but I really can't justify buying someone elses old system, even to save $30. I'd be too afraid something would go wrong, lol.

Wal-Mart seems to be the best option, I even might be able to get $70 in store credit for a couple of purchases I have to return. So that'd bring the total for the system and ESPN hockey to, what about $190? Also, with the Live kit at Target for $24-$34 it seems like a no brainer.

I also wanted to play KOTOR, so an Xbox keeps looking better and better

Any advice, recommendations, etc would be very appreciated

I'd say with your $70 credit it looks like Wal-mart's package is the way to go.

I just remember how much I paid for the console only shortly after launch

I suggested a few in the other thread, what kind of games do you like? Sports game rock on live, ESPN football is a blast.

Hate to mention the obvious but Halo is rumored to be a pretty good FPS, and actually Brute Force is turning out to be not so bad, but not really in the same class as Halo. Baldur's Gate is a pretty good hack n slash.

morrowind is good - there's also a bunch of RPGs coming for the Xbox soon.

Brute Force isn't a FPS, but it's allright
Halo is great
Ghost Recon = Must have
Mace Griffin = so-so, but worth picking up
Wolfenstein = better on PC, but still worth buying.
Unreal - good only if you're into online
Timesplitters 2 = teh suckekekekekeke

sports?
check out Outlaw Golf and Deathrow.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I can't believe Halo is still $50, wasn't it one of the first games to launch?

Morrowind is a great RPG. The gameplay is endless. I would wait to pick it up til the Game of the Year edition comes out. I believe its next month actually. Hopefully, it will have all the bugs fixed from the first edition. Also, it will come with the two expansion packs included.

Bethesda Softworks® today announced that it will release a Morrowind Game of the Year™ (GotY) edition for the Xbox™ video game system from Microsoft that will include the original version of its award-winning RPG The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind®, along with content from the two Morrowind expansions: Tribunal™ and Bloodmoon™. This new product will allow gamers to continue their existing games of Morrowind and experience the new quests and areas offered by the expansions, while players who have never played the Best RPG of 2002 can experience Morrowind on Xbox for the first time with all of the added content.

Okay, I did it. I got an Xbox Splinter Cell/Mech Assault bundle, a Live 2.0 kit, and KOTOR. Also picked up Simpsons Road Rage for the gf

Ended up getting $100 worth of credit from Wal-Mart, so it was a deal. Got everything for $220.

So how does Live work? Does it cost anything? Sorry to be a complete Xbox n00b here, lol. What are the pros and cons of owning an Xbox?

yeah, grab the Live 2.0 kit at Target for $34. You can also try to go to Best Buy and have them PM the Live Kit to $34, and then get their deal where you save $15 instantly when you buy an Xbox title

but chances are they'd give you the old "sorry that promotion is cancelled out because we PM'd."

Another question...how do I hook up both my Xbox and Gamecube to the same tv? I currently have my Cube hooked up to the VCR, and the DVD player hooked up to the tv, so what about the Xbox? Is there some special hookup that allows both systems to be hooked up or do I have to use the other tv?
