–––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

and yes, there WILL be a "Video Hits 3" DVD.

What's left to include on a VH3 DVD you ask? The following is NOT a complete listing but it'll give you an idea;

Innuendo album:
Videos;
Innuendo
Headlong
These Are the Days of Our Lives (two versions, one with animation, the other without)
The Show Must Go On (though this is unlikely as Queen have stated they want to include "proper" videos, not clip fests which TSMGO most certainly is.)
I'm Going Slightly Mad

There is making of material for some of these videos, specifically for "...Slightly Mad" to be used as bonus footage.

Made In Heaven album:
The "official" videos were sadly clip fests so again, these are unlikely to be used. However, Queen had the British Film Institute bring together some of their students to create "Made In Heaven: The Films" so chances are these are the videos they would use.

The 1997 video for "No One But You"

Then there are the Queen+ videos which include;

Queen+ Five "We Will Rock You"
Queen+ Elton John "The Show Must Go On" (from the Bejart Ballet, the last live performance of the 3 surviving members)
Queen+ Vanguard "Flash"
Queen+ David Bowie "Under Pressure" (rah mix)
Queen+ Wyclef Jean "Another One Bites the Dust"

Of course, I wouldn't be surprised if they devoted a healthy chunk of space on a 2nd disc towards the "We Will Rock You" musical.

Also possibilities as bonus material, solo videos by Brian May and Roger Taylor.

but a volume 3 won't see the light of day until late 2004 so there's plenty of time to unearth more good stuff.

"Live at Wembley Stadium" (their last DVD) was full screen, so I see no reason why they'll revert back to widescreen matting.

The US release date for the DVD is November 11th.

According to some UK retailers, GVH2 will be widescreen (not confirmed yet, we'll see.)

Also, here's an alternate cover for the DVD;

This cover will be used for a 3 month limited run in the UK only.

Ok, so the US release date is now November 25th and according to fans in Europe, most of the videos are indeed in widescreen.

I have this and I must say that is has some of the most ABSURD use of WS I have ever seen.

On the whole it's not bad, three videos were actually made in WS (Hard Life, Princes and I want It All) and these come out the best.

Radio Ga Ga has been very cleverley re-done as this, although made in 4:3 had a 'squashed ws effect on the choruses'. This has been replaced with a more natural ws image. The rest of Ga Ga is a 4:3 window within a 16:9 frame and all in all it works well.

Strangely, Invisble Man has been left in original 4:3 OAR

BUT... and here's the kicker.....

Magic and Hammer to Fall have been messed up completely.

Magic (although shot in approx 1.66:1) has merely been stretched horizontally so the image looks fat and distrorted, but you can easily override this by manually setting your WS TV to 4:3 or zoom.

And as for Hammer to Fall....Well you tell me as I have never seen anything like it. VERY STRANGE

As for the rest, they're not to bad, better than Hits 1.
Overall pic quality is ok, a bit grainy on some vids (esp Body Language).

The sound like Hits1 varies from 5.1 to 4.1 but overall is an excellent mix apart from Back Chat which is very weird as lead guitar seems to take center stage with Freddie's vocals coming from the rear !!

The commentary is excellent, especially from Roger who is cynical to say the least!

Some good extras in all and a worthy purchase but no demos disk by a long shot and not in the same class as WWRY or Wembley DVD.

Here are some screen grabs showing the aspect ratio problems mentioned above.
(These are exactly how you would see them on a WS TV set to the usual 'anamorphic wide mode').
Note, Invisible man auto switches to 4:3 mode.

Kind of Magic

Fat Fred !
The annoying thing here is they had room for a good 16:9 conversion as it was shot in approx 1.66:1 !

Radio Ga Ga #1

Radio Ga Ga #2 (Chorus)

Invisible Man

Hammer to Fall

Freddie looks un-naturally thin (this was 1984 and not 1991!)

This last one I just cannot get my head round as it was originally shot in 4:3.
They seem to have stretched it horizontally x 1 and vertically x 2 !

Technical error?, worthy of a recall?

You tell me !

Kevo, thanks for the screenshots

One day, Queen will see the light and come into the OAR fold.

As for "Hammer To Fall", are you saying it looks like (or similar to) the fast "We Will Rock You" video that's on disc 2 of GVH1? That one was full frame but the image was stretched vertically for some reason.

Yes, it's the same as WWRY (fast) on Hits 1.

There must be a reason for this but I can't think of one!

Brian's hinted that may be released in OAR in the future and he prefers OAR too, so who knows.

Makes you wonder how much control he actually has if he claims to prefer OAR but all their DVDs (sans Wembley) is MAR.
