would you go back to buying music?

i know its not likely but consider the hypothetical situation and assume prices remain the same.

personally, i cant go back. no way i could buy another cd in my life. im not sure what id do for music (cept for radio).

please only answer this poll if you currently dl music and NEVER buy cds at all anymore.

I'd buy the way I do today. I buy used CDs, because they are close to the price I think a CD is really worth. If I couldn't get it used, I wouldn't buy it. Even at that, I still wouldn't buy much, maybe one or two CDs a year, from artists I am really into.

At the height of Napster, I was buying about 60 CDs a year. I made an effort to stop buying CDs after the RIAA took such a hard line stance with MP3s -- the price fixing scandal and the my.mp3.com fiasco was the final straw for me. my.mp3.com was a fantastic service that has not yet been duplicated, and one that extensively enhanced the value of my CDs.

It was very hard at first, and I still buy the occaisional used CD, but after a few months of doing without, I found it really wasn't as hard as I thought. I really don't need all that music. What makes me saddest though, is that I used to spend hours in CD stores, and I would daydream about winning the lottery or being exceptionally rich and being able to buy every CD I wanted. Now, I barely even look at the CDs at Best Buy, and I actually feel disgusted if I linger too long. I have no desire now, even if I was fantastically wealthy, to go on a CD buying spree. I've even entertained selling off the collection I own now.

I buy music now. I went through a brief period of huge amounts of downloads, but mostly now I just buy it--I'll only download stuff that isn't available any other way (unreleased and/or OOP)

I buy music now.. that is worth buying. I wont buy an album that has 1 good song and a lot of filler. if you want my cash, you have to earn it. even without p2p's. I would still just settle with radio. they play songs to death anyways.

Yeah, I don't get it either. I buy music now too. In fact, I buy more now than I probably would without file-sharing. So, I guess if music sharing suddenly became impossible, I'd go back to borrowing CDs from friends to find out what was good. But, then, that's "music sharing" so I don't know. If all music sharing were impossible, I guess I'd depend on the descriptive recommendations of others whom I knew to have similar tastes to know what's good or not, which would drastically drecrease my expenditures. I imagine I'd probably compensate by diverting more funds to imports or alternate recordings of artists I already knew I liked.

I agree that the genie's out of the bottle, but not for free music ... for quality music. Now that I'm aware that the music on the radio is garbage compared to much of the stuff that's out there but severely underpromoted, I'm never going to buy an album again simply because I heard a catchy track on the radio. There's really nothing that can happen to take away that enlightenment (save the music industry changing its corporate clone radio strategy).

In short, music sharing is my primary source of knowing what to buy. If it suddenly became impossible, I guess I'd either have to find another source of knowing what to buy or simply stop buying.

I haven't bought a CD in years. I don't download too much music, either, but I will sometimes go on a rampage and download a number of songs at a time. In between the porn, that is.

I will never stop buying music. There's a few reasons I download:
1. Not yet released material
2. Just to sample the music to see if it's worth buying
3. Not available in the store

I think the quality of MP3s suck! I have a really high end stereo system in my car and at home, the last thing I want to do is listen to crappy mp3s on them. I want the full quality of the regular cd. I don't care what anybody says there is a big difference between mp3 and the original.

Me either. But many CDs have lots of good songs on them. Those are the ones I try to buy (it's pretty easy to check out all the songs on a CD nowadays, legally, before buying it).

I almost never buy music and I don't think that would change at all if file sharing stopped. I buy from the few artists that I almost always enjoy- the ones I can count on to not release albums with only one or two good songs.

My personal theory is this :

I download a lot of music. Probably more then is considered "minimal" by the RIAA. However a lot(read : 95%) is stuff that the RIAA doesnt have any interest in.

I listen to a lot of "underground" hip hop acts, and they aren't always easy to find, so I download the stuff, check it out,a nd I'll eventually buy it. I orderd 10 CDs off of half/ebay this week.

Its not that I don't WANT the CD, I just have a problem tracking down the stuff I like.

File sharing has never played a factor into whether I want to buy a cd or not. MP3 quality sucks.

Then you aren't listening to well ripped/encoded MP3s at a decent quality level.

I still buy a lot of music, but most of it is filling holes in my collection. There's very little new stuff that comes out that I "just have to have". If it became impossible I'd probably buy less because I have been exposed to a lot of European bands etc that aren't popular here.

Please!....yes I have. I tried the 320 level and myself, along with my brother EASILY noticed a difference on both our systems in our cars and in our homes.

Interesting. I've got pretty good ears and while I can notice a small difference between a LAME encoded mp3 using a good decoding codec at 192kbs and CD quality sound, I find that the difference is unperceptable at 256kbs. It all depends on the encoding and what you're actually playing it through. I've downloaded some files at 256 that sound like utter crap compared to something at 192. I've done some double blind listening tests to confirm this (and done the tests to train/verify that your ears pick up defects in the sound quality as well).

But of course YMMV. I don't claim to have the best ears in the world and if they sound like crap to you, then they do. I wouldn't listen to anything that sounded noticably degraded in quality either.
