Any thoughts on the music performance at the VMAs?

My 1st thought when Metallica started to play a bunch of songs from the past 20 years of MTV was "Aren't they using and profiting from music that doesn't belong to them without crediting the original artists".. Kind of an anti-napster thing... anyway, what did you guys think?

I enjoyed Coldplay's performance.

Other than that not impressed with anything except a few bits here and there (brittney/madonna and the Jimmy Fallon with the Queer Eye for the Straight Guy bit with the "Black Eye from the Straight Guy" line).

Coldplay was the only thing good to me. Didnt catch the Madonna thing...Everything else was pretty much unwatchable. When they would perform I would hit the mute. the 50 cent thing wasnt bad though..But I turned it off, I couldnt finish it..Too many radio wonders in one place

.. man, still a funny joke either way, but the shots to the "mouth" that you misquoted is about 10x dirtier... way to go!

As I asked in another forum, the VMA's left me with this question...

Why is it that the men of the rap community are so fascinated with fondling their genitals while they sing or talk?

Most people outgrow this habit before they hit 10.

Metallica was cool but I wish James had done a little singing during the tribute... Other than that Madonna was the only other exciting performance for me. My favorite rip from Rock was "Getting Paula Abdul to judge singing is like getting Chrisopher Reeve to judge dancing." Really low but I laughed hard.

That was hilarious. I would have loved to see the face on Paula when Rock said that

I enjoyed Coldplay's performance, and I also liked the first thing Metallica played. Except for that new bass player. Doesn't Cousin It know that Jason Newsted would never have danced around like a chicken onstage????

But I did not like the song Metallica played after Chris Rock dismissed the show. And Kirk Hammett looks old. Made me kinda sad.

Metallica is a pale sell-out shade of their former selves, but Rob Trujillo is a damned fine bassist. Metallica needed someone that actually moved around on stage, and Rob's bass work is much better than Jason's.

Check out some Suicidal Tendancies or Infectious Grooves.

NO. I liked Jason Newsted. Has nothing to do with his talent as a bassist. I think he fit the band better.

Woah. Looking back, this looks a little harsh. So I guess I should try to explain myself better. It's not going to make any sense, because it's not based on reason.
Metallica used to be my favorite band, and after Cliff Burton was replaced after Master of Puppets I got used to Jason Newsted. So when I saw them live, it was always Jason Newsted. And now, even though I don't listen to the band like I used to, I don't like it being different....

I was the same way at first about Jay Bennett being replaced with Leroy Bach and Ken Coomer being replaced with Glenn Kotche. It's okay now, but it was weird at first.

It's kinda like Big Red and Chicken in a Biscuit changing their packaging after so many years of being the same.
