Desperado/El Mariachi Collectors Box Set... Anyone Have?

I went to my local Best Buy, to my favorite Target... and nothing! I've seen it on Amazon, but I figured since I was out I'd just pick it up. I'd rather hold it in my hands and get a good look before I purchase. Does anyone have the Collectors Box Set? Good lookin box? Where'd ya get it? Info!!!

I found (and bought it) at a Best Buy in Dallas. The individual movies were $14.99 each there...the collector's box was $19.99

So it wasn't just some pack of the two strapped together, it was an actual set?

Right, it has an actual box...which is extremely cool looking...my only complaint is that it's an entire box... ie. no open areas to slide the disc in and out of, without opening the box flaps... still, for the price, a very decent deal.

I picked it up yesterday at BB and there were only 3 left. Unfortunately, the El Mariachi disk was defective. It wouldn't play any of the trailers and it would skip constantly after the first 25mins. So I went to exchange it today but they had none left and the manager said that they weren't going to get any new shipments any time soon so I got a gift card. I'm going to have to look at another Best buy this weekend. If they don't have it there then I guess its Amazon for me.

Both movies are just placed inside a collector's box. Nothin special really, except the price.

Yes, it's good. Read some reviews. I think if you like Desperado, you'll definitely like El Mariachi unless you have an aversion to reading subtitles.

I found my copy at tower video @ $19.99 .

I was suprised by El Mariachi....never saw it before....only saw Desperado previously. Now I know the significance of the beginning of Desperado.....interesting...

Is El Mariachi anamorphic? What is the AR? Does it look better than before? Is it just the same transfer?

Cheers

It is anamorphic, and the aspect ratio is 1.85:1. As for it's original aspect ratio, that's another story. The movie was originally shot for direct to video, but got such good buzz it got picked up for theatrical release. So Rodriguez filmed it thinking regular TV screens, not movie screens. For the theatrical release it was matted to 1.85, and that was also used for the DVD. As such, the framing is very tight, but it never seems to really hide anything critical.

CTS would been wise to include a 4x3 version, or at least allow a reframing at something like 1.66, but the current version is fine for now.

How does it look though? I have the NTSC laserdisc (1.66) which looks better (quality wise) than my UK dvd (1.85 anamorphic).

I am pondering over getting a US version but if the new version is as bad as the UK one, I would be better off getting the old one.

I went to Best Buy, they were sold out of the box, but they were charging $34.99 for the box and $14.99 for each movie.

I'm keeping my original double-set. The new release doesn't have anything new that interests me. Me Wal-Mart has them for $14.44. I've seen them at places for $35.00.

Trivia: The guy who plays "El Marichi" in the first movie, turns up in Desperado as the Campa, the one with the machine gun guitar case.

Does the new set have the director's "film school" commentary?

Probably...but the price on this set is pretty damn good, so I didn't hesitate to pick it up.

I have the original flipper. Did they remaster them? What extras are in the new set that aren't on the original? In other words, is there any compelling reason to double-dip if I don't have a DVD changer?

desprarado is I think the picture quality is near or at the superbit dvd, and uses 5.1 sound (no dts). the el marachi dvd still has lots of grain ect, but I hear the colors and ect were enhanced. There is no dub on that one. The only "new" main extra is the previews for once upon a time in mexico. They don't show footage, but a little prieview, and that was the main reason for the rerelease.

I went to my best buy (pasadena) early anticipating the shortage of stock but to my amusement there were at least 8-10 copies on the shelf.

Good deal and good movies
