Depeche Mode 101 DVD 10/14

From MusicTap.net:

The DVD, Depeche Mode 101, will be released on October 14.

Even thought the DM website still says:

> There is no absolute release date set yet (just sometime in 2003), but D. A. Pennebaker is involved in the project. Bonus features are being worked on for the DVD reissue.

Thank the good lord!
I have their previous DVD releases (I'm a huge Depeche Mode fan) and I've been eagerly awaiting this ...

This and Tori Amos: Live in NY at Madison Square Garden, would make my music /DVD collection complete.

One of the very few times I can say "now I can get rid of my laser disc" (since I only own about 8, all music videos)

ditto. the only reason why i've kept my LD player around was because of several 80's music releases that aren't available on dvd yet. Polygram released a slew of music comps, and i hope whoever owns their music library wakes up and get them released!

They have a lot of catching up to do (no pun). Where are the earlier videos, Strange/Strange Too, and The World We Live In & Live In Hamburg.

Duran Duran need to get cracking on more of the older stuff, too.

Sadly, I just read that "101" on DVD won't include the rumored entire "Music for the Masses" concert (on disc 2). No word yet on exactly will be included as the extras.

I also read (and tried to find the thread before responding, with no luck) that Duran Duran have a double DVD coming out in the Fall full of videos which includes remixes. Tears for Fears Greatest Hits is also expected out in September on DVD. As well as Human League and that acoustic Howard Jones anniversary concert last year.

Yeah, but as discussed by some in this thread, it's not complete:

http://www.dvdtalk.com/forum/showthr...ighlight=duran

And like DM, there were several other things out there--concerts, documentaries. My personal choice would be a full set with ARENA (with and without the extra bits)/WHEN THE LIGHTS GO DOWN.

From DVDFile.com:

Also due on October 21st is Depeche Mode 101, D.A. Pennebaker's document of the synth-pop pioneer's landmark Rose Bowl concert in 1988. This two-disc set features the complete film presented in its original 4:3 aspect ratio and Dolby Digital 2.0 plus an audio commentary by the band, and also includes a second disc of new supplements: a 60-minute concert special with unexpurgated performances, additional interviews, the "Everything Counts" video and a still gallery. Retail is $29.95.

I also found this interesting from the next paragraph:

Rounding it out is another 80's fave, INXS, who will reissue their 1990 concert film Live Baby Live through BMG Music in a new special edition on October 7th. Presented in 4:3 full screen with a new Dolby Digital 5.1 remix, extras include new band interviews, backstage footage and a still gallery. Retail is $24.95.

More DM material

I talked to Anton Corbijn two years ago, and he said efforts are being made to put both "Strange" videos on one DVD for a release following "101". So if "101" is here, they should follow shortly, hopefully.

Indeed, no word on "Devotional" yet.

Oh, I'll buy it...

But, once again, another inexplicable, lossy DD-2.0 track on a music disc. How sad.

Full-blooded, non-lossy, two-channel LPCM would fit so easily. When are they gonna learn?

Great news!

As someone who was actually at the '88 Rose Bowl show in Pasadena (ah, the fond memories of food fights gone awry.., ) it will be great to see this concert film finally on DVD.

Depeche Mode Release Classic 2 Disc DVD Set
'101' + Live 1988 Rose Bowl Show Released October 13th

Depeche Mode release the legendary DA Pennebaker film '101' for the first time ever on DVD coupled with their classic concert 'Live At The Rose Bowl - June 18th 1988' on October 20th. This highly collectable DVD package features over 3 hours of footage and includes recent interviews with Martin Gore, Andrew Fletcher and Dave Gahan filmed by DA Pennebaker especially for this DVD.

1988 was a pivotal year for Depeche Mode. It was during their "Music For the Masses' world tour that they exploded into the musical mainstream. The Rose Bowl concert was the 10lst and last date of the tour and both discs capture a band and their audience at the height of their love affair.

Acclaimed film-maker DA Pennebaker was best known for his seminal Dylan film 'Don't Look Back' in addition to his work with Hendrix and John Lennon. Yet it was his marriage with alternative pioneers Depeche Mode that produced the frank and honest film '101'.

"It was the most interesting, fun film we've ever done," Pennebaker said.

"That tour and that film was so important, especially for the perception of the band," says Martin Gore. "We'd always been on the brink, especially in America but that 1988 tour was the first time we headlined big arenas, the first time the band really took off."

"There was something special about that whole time," Dave Gahan adds. "After that concert I remember sitting down in the dressing room and I just cried. It was just so emotional."

Andrew Fletcher echoes those sentiments: "It was one of the most amazing tours I've ever been on and a breaking point for alternative music in the US. The Rose Bowl was the first time that alternative radio sold out a big show in the US."

Integral to both the DVD and the concert was the relationship between band and audience. A competition was held nationwide where a bus load of winners followed the band around. Some of those fans are interviewed for this DVD and still remain in touch with Depeche Mode.

June 18, 1988 was a day to remember for the 60,453 fans who attended the show. Now we can relive the day through the eyes of one of cinema's most accomplished documentary makers.

Noticed that '101' is also being released on SACD at the same time as the DVD release

On the subject of the DVD it's a shame it isn't the entire concert on disc 2 nor does it have 'The Story of 101' which aired on MTV around the time of the release of the movie.
I've also heard that Mute and Pennebaker are both receiving 'hate' mail from fans unhappy that the release isn't going to live up to their expectations Pathetic!!
