Did you realize "The Shining" has been remade, I have the Jack Nicolson one, No body could replace him as Johnny the axe murerer "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy" how many thousand times did he type it with all of those papers in the inbox? I don't even want to think of the remake, for I was turned off by "The Time machine" 2002 I still like the original with Rod Taylor and too cute Yvette Mimieux anamorphic and remixed 5.1

I have both and enjoyed the remake.

I also enjoyed both versions of the time machine.

I agree with ya, danol. (Somewhere down in the bowels of Hades, Satan is getting out his ice skates... ) The remake of The Time Machine is pretty bad. I'm glad I rented it before buying it sight unseen. However, the original is a classic and I bought it the day it was released on DVD. Great fun.

From what I understand Stephen King didn't like some of the things Kubrick did with the original. The remake is more of a straight adaptation of the classic book.

I don't see the connection between the The Time Machine and The Shining other than both were re-made films.

Kinda like saying:

do you realize that like My Boss' Daughter and Sea Biscuit came out this year - they are both movies. I don't know about Sea Biscuit because I saw My Boss' Daughter and I was turned off by it.

Just judge a film on its own merits.

The Shining: I have both, I like both. The Kubrick version took a while to grow on me since it's so different from the book, but it has. I like the new one just as a literal interpretation of the book.

The Time Machine: I've seen both, I don't have either. I will buy the original, I like it quite a lot. I won't buy the remake, I just didn't enjoy it.

I thought you were asking if we bought the original DVD of the Kubrick version or the remaster. Anyone who just has the original should really get the remaster as it looks and sounds much better. I have the Kubrick film and the miniseries.

I also don't consider the miniseries to be a "remake," since it was based on the book and not the Kubrick film. I would put it into the category with Peter Jackson's version of the LOTR trilogy, which is not a remake of the Ralph Bakshi/Ranken Bass animated films, and most of the recent Shakespeare adaptations which have already had films based on the same plays.

WRT the Time Machine, I've seen both I may eventually buy the original but I've seen all I want to of the remake Same w/ Planet of Apes as long as we are making loose connections between movies...

Same here. I have no interest in the original, but I liked (and bought) the "remake."

Oh, and I do have both versions of The Time Machine, and both versions of Planet of the Apes (plus all of the Apes sequels, and the Apes TV series).

If you were going to call one version "the real version," I don't see how you can say the version actually approved by the author of the original story is not "the real version."

Not a remake, just another movie (made for TV, by the way) based on the book. I only own the Kubrick but I saw the newer version when it first aired.

Kubrick's version is a classic that will live on in film history. I watched the TV version and was bored to tears. Also, I wanted to personally kill that kid that played Danny in the TV version. I also couldn't make it through King's book...similarly bored to tears.

There are actually three versions. The "international cut" of the '80 version runs about 25 minutes shorter than the US cut and was cut by Kubrick himself. I own all three versions, and I think the international Kubrick version (available on dvd in Europe & Australia) is by far the best version of the story.
