Today's CDs (8/20/03)

The Mars Volta - De-loused in the Comatorium
Kings of Leon - Youth and Young Manhood
Widespread Panic - Don't Tell the Band
Pavement - Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain
Grandaddy - Sumday

QOTD: Worst album you've purchased this year?

Mine would have to be Jane's Addiction's Strays. Just don't care for it at all. The title track is okay, and there's one or two other songs I don't mind. As a whole though, the album does nothing for me.

A close second would be Dying in Stereo by Northern State. It's a novelty record and not even a very funny one.

Oddly, I bought these two discs on the same day...

The Verve-A Northern Soul
Beck-Midnight Vultures
Four Tet-Pause
Autechre-Draft 7.30

Worst album I've purchased this year is Christopher O'Riley plays Radiohead or whatever. Pure junk and boring as hell. It's good on first listen but then it gets annoying.
Runner ups are: Zwan, The Coral, The Music.
The Jane's Addiction album doesn't even begin to compare to their previous records but thankfully I didn't buy it.

Smashing Pumpkins - Siamese Dream
Hooverphonic - Blue Wonder Powder Milk
James Iha - Let It Come Down
Sleater Kinney - One Beat
Curve - Gift

I haven't bought any really terrible albums this year. I've cut my cd buying down quite a bit and only purchase things I really want.

Sixpence None the Richer - This Beautiful Mess
Kronos Quartet - Pieces of Africa
Ani Difranco - To the Teeth

QOTD - I also have really cut down on the amount of albums I have purchased. Probably the "worst" album that I have purchased was the new Bright Eyes album, "Lifted." However, the album I listen to the least from this year is Interpol, which I think is a better album than Bright Eyes yet I listen to less.

TV on the Radio, Young Liars EP
Angels of Light, Everything is Good Here/Please Come Home
Do Make Say Think, & Yet & Yet
Deerhoof, Apple O'

I'm lucky enough to either love or at least like a fair amount all of the 2k3 releases I've bought this year. Probably the only one on the lower end of the bracket would be this TV on the Radio EP. It's nice enough - especially the a capella cover of "Mr Grieves" (!) - but it didn't strike me the way it has struck some people I talk to. However, it really doesn't sound like anything that I can recall from this year. That is very refreshing.

-edit to add-
I've also really increased my CD purchasing this year by a large number.

The Neptunes - The Neptunes Present...Clones
Rjd2 - Deadringer
Bach - Violin Concertos
Uncle Tupelo - Still Feel Gone

I've been lucky with this year's releases so far and remain disappointment-free. I haven't bought as much new stuff as I usually do, though.

Year of the Rabbit S/T

Saw these guys last night (8/19/03). They put on a great show. If anyone is a Failure fan or Ken Andrews fan pick up this cd. It's one of the best albums released this year.

Qotd - The cd's I've bought this year haven't been that bad. If I had to choose it would be either The Coral or The Music and that's just because neither really grabbed me upon first listen. Perhaps I will stick them in the player again.

Sonic Youth - "Dirty" reissue
Neil Young - "On the Beach" reissue (OH YEAH!)
Giddy Motors - "Make It Pop"

Q of the D:
Jay Farrar's most recent full-length - it's not awful, but there is way too much filler and unnecessary interludes

Yesterday was a very expensive day for new cds.

I got the new albums from Guided by Voices, Superchunk, Over the Rhine, Rancid, Kings of Leon, and Gaelic Storm.

I didn't even know OTR had a new album...what's it called? How does it compare to some of their other stuff (Good Dog Bad Dog)

Porcupine Tree - Lightbulb Sun
Porcupine Tree - In Absentia
Opeth - Deliverance
Opeth - Damnation
Asylum Street Spankers - Live

QOTD - Metallica - St. Anger. Although I don't think it's a horrible album, I haven't bought but maybe four CDs this year and those blew St. Anger out of the water.

Rachel Loshak - Mint
Sondre Lerche - Faces Down
Hem - Rabbit Songs
Grandaddy - Sumday

QOTD- Jay Farrar's new album, Terrior Blues. I'm sorry, but I don't get all the "Space Junk" tracks. Some of the songs are pretty good, but I get tired of skipping every other "Space Junk" track.

The new Over the Rhine album is called "Ohio". It's 2 discs with 20 tracks total. I think it is much better than the last album and right up there with "Good Dog Bad Dog". Very strong vocals and piano.
