Amount of commericals per 30 mins?

I was watching some MTV over the weekend and it seemed like per a 30 min time period there were more commericals than show. Is there any fact to this that MTV or other stations show more commericals per 30 mins than another stations?

I think the standard is 8 minutes of commercials.

The reason why you probably think there are more on MTV is that their shows (like Real World and Punk'd) only have 2 commercial breaks of 4 minutes each. However, 30 minute shows on the networks have 3 commercial breaks so shorter breaks.

Back in the PT* days, I used to put shows to VHS and would edit out the commercials along the way. Shows went from 46 minutes to 40-41 over the course of a couple years.

I don't know where MTV sits today, but the very few shows I actually watch on it require skipping through at least 5 minutes of commercials per break. I wouldn't doubt they have the most commercials out of any network.

Way back when (check the Outer Limits DVDs) shows actually contained as much as 51 minutes per hour! And it keeps getting worse - even the X-Files lost a few minutes per epsiode between Season One and Season Nine.
