Just got Premier magazine's fall preview issue and thought i'd see what folks had to say about the upcoming "Oscar season." I'll list the new flicks by month and try to note those that i'm most looking forward to.....

September:

Once Upon A Time In Mexico 9/12 - Robert Rodriguez's cap to his own modern western Trilogy. Banderas, Hayek, Depp star.

Lost in Translation 9/12 - Sofia Coppola's follow-up to Virgin Suicides stars Bill Murray, Scarlett Johansson, and Giovanni Ribisi. Looks very promising.

Underworld 9/19 - Kate Beckinsale is a vampire in love with a werewolf....i'll pass.

Under the Tuscan Sun 9/26 - Diane Lane finds herself in Tuscany following a divorce....Lane adds much intrigue...but definately rental material until i hear further.

The Rundown 9/12 - The Rock + Stiffler and Christopher Walken in the South American Jungle....

October:

Out of Time - 10/3 Denzel romatic thriller

Mystic River - 10/10 Eastwood directs Sean Penn, Tim Robbins, and Kevin Bacon....looks very promising.

Pieces of April - 10/17 - Katie Holmes cooks thanksgiving dinner for her dysfunctional family.

The Singing Detective - 10/24 - Robert Downey, Mel Gibson, and singing?

The School of Rock - 10/13 - Jack Black - nuff said

Gothika - 10/24 - Halle Berry goes crazy.

In the Cut - 10/24 - Meg Ryan bears all in this thriller about a serial killer - with Mark Ruffalo as the cop who might have done it.

Sylvia - 10/17 Gwenneth Paltrow is Sylvia Plath.


November:

Matrix Revolutions - 11/5

Elf - 11/5 Will Ferrell Romp.

Eternal Sunshine o fthe Spotless Mind - 11/14 - Charlie Kaufman's latest stars Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet (as well as Kirsten Dunst, Tom Wilkinson, and Elijah Wood). Winslett erases ex-bf Carrey from her memory banks via a radical new surgery. VERY much looking forward to this one.

Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World - 11/14 - Russell Crowe goes a sea-farin'....Peter Wier directing is the only spark for me on this one.

Dr. Seuss' Cat in the Hat - 11/21 - Mike Meyers is the Cat...will see it with my daughter i'm sure.

Radio - 11/21 - Cuba Gooding is a retard in feel-good entry #1.

Timeline - 11/26 - Paul Walker goes to 14th century france to rescue Billy Connelly.

Bad Santa - 11/26 - Billy Bob and Bernie Mac team up to steal stuff.


December:

The Last Samurai - 12/?? - Tom Cruise's latest Oscar bait....not sure what to think here....could be best picture....could be Ishtar.

The Missing - 12/10 - Since Ron Howard backed out of the Alamo, he did this western with Tommy Lee Jones and Cate Blanchett instead...could be great, could be blah...

The Statement - 12/12 - Norman Jewison tells the tale of a Catholic Nazi (Michael Caine) whose pigeons have come home to roost. can you say oscar bait?

Untitled Nancy Meyers Project - 12/12 - Jack, Diane Keaton, Keanu, Frances McDormand, and Amanda Peet....looks good to me.

Girl With A Pearl Earing - 12/12 - Colin Firth & Scarlett Johannson period piece.

Stuck on You - 12/12 - Matt Damon and Greg Kinnear are siamese twins in the latest Farrely bros effort.

Cold Mountain - 12/25 - Jude Law and Nicole Kidman on xmas day - will be huge but i'm luke warm at this point.

House of Sand and Fog - 12/25 - Ben Kingsley buys a CA house and Jennifer Connelly shows up to demand the return of what's hers - looks very very good.

Lord of the Rings: Return of the King - 12/17 - could push 3 1/2 hrs, but i'll be there opening day.

The Alamo - 12/25 - the Title i'm most curious to see.

The Company - 12/25 - Robert Altman directs Neve Campbell in a look at a ballet company - apparently Campbell was a dancer before acting. Might be interesting.

Kill Bill - Nothing to say here....can't wait!!

Casa De Los Babys - John Sayles at the helm means i'll see it......Lili Taylor, Marcia Gay Harden, Daryl Hannah, Mary Steenburgen, and Maggie Gyllenhall cros paths in South America as they wait to adopt Children.

My Life Without Me - Sarah Polley has cancer.

Cold Creek Manor - Dennis Quaid and Sharon Stone have to deal with Stephen Dorff returning from prison to claim what's his.

Cabin Fever - Flesh-eating virus in the woods...

Wonderland - Val Kilmer plays John Holmes = i'm there!

Party Monster - true story yarn about a club kid turned murderer starring Macaulay Caulkin and Seth Green....highly anticipating this one.

Elephant - Gus Van Zandt's Cannes winning columbine-esque drama.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre - with Jessica Biel.

Looney Tunes: Back in Action - Brendan Fraser, Jenna Elfman, Heather Locklear, and Steve Martin: will rake in the bucks, but i hope it doesn't suck.

In America - Irish family rebuilds in America....looks very promising.

The Cooler - William H. Macy finds that his infectious bad luck starts to change in Vegas. Another Oscar nod for Macy?

Intolerable Cruelty - The Coens take a stab at romantic comedy with George Clooney and Catherine Zeta-Jones. Jones wants to get revenge on divorce attorney Clooney, but they fall in love....not so sure about this one, but it is the Coens so i'll give them the benefit of the doubt for now....

Of course, i'll be lucky to catch even half of those in the theater....but i'm hopeful. Highest Curiousity factor goes to the Last Samurai, Cold Mountain, and the Alamo. I love historical pieces (fancy that), so this could be the best December in a long time or the most dissapointing....we'll wait and see.

Also really looking forward to Party Monster, The Cooler, and Wonderland....

I'm hoping Underworld is good, its an interesting concept but I don't know how it'll be.

The one movie I have to see this September is The Rundown, yes I know its going to be terrible but holy crap its The Rock, Stifler and Christopher Walken in one movie, its a must see.

I saw the Runaway Jury trailer before SWAT last weekend and it does look promising. It is based on the Grisham novel but if the trailer is any indication, it doesn't stick too closely to the book (not that that's a bad thing).

Once Upon A Time In Mexico - I'm there.
Lost in Translation - Our theater won't get this. Maybe on DVD.
Underworld - Excited to see this. I like the concept and Kate looks amazing in it, but it has the potential to be a big disappointment.
Under the Tuscan Sun - No no no no no. Love Diane, but no.
The Rundown - I'll see it. Trailer was okay, could go either way.
Out of Time - Sick of the trailer, but could be okay.
Mystic River - Haven't seen much about this. I'll probably check it out just because of who's involved.
Pieces of April - We won't get this.
The Singing Detective - No thank you.
The School of Rock - Looks like great stuff, but from the trailer the ending might be cringeworthy.
Gothika - I like the story, but I don't think Halle is right for the role. We'll see.
In the Cut - Sounds like something I've seen a thousand times. I'll wait til I see a trailer to make the call.
Sylvia - Ugh. No way.
Matrix Revolutions - Will be there with fingers crossed.
Elf - Looks like something that would've been funny as hell as a SNL sketch but doesn't have the steam for a full movie.
Eternal Sunshine o fthe Spotless Mind - I think this moved to 2004.
Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World - The trailer grows on me each time I see it. I'll definitely check it out.
Dr. Seuss' Cat in the Hat - I see 60+ movies at theaters a year, and I still haven't seen the Grinch, and this looks worse (although the mom centerfold scene in the trailer is pretty good).
Radio - I Am Sam meets Remember the Titans? Such a blatant attempt to show that he's still the serious actin', Oscar winnin' guy despite Boat Trip and Snow Dogs. Whatever.
Timeline - I like the trailer, but Paul Walker?
Bad Santa - Lauren Graham. Nice. Plus it's from the director of Ghost World. Worth a look.
The Last Samurai - Will see it.
The Missing - Trailer looks great, but the synopsis sounds kinda dull. I'll take a chance on it.
The Statement - Intriguing.
Untitled Nancy Meyers Project - I'll wait for reviews on this one. Sounds like a snoozer from the premise, despite the talent involved.
Girl With A Pearl Earing - Yawn.
Stuck on You - Plot descriptions sound funny, and with the Farrelly Bros. at the helm I expect some great setups.
Cold Mountain - Interesting based on the talent involved, but I'm not sold on the premise until I see the trailer.
House of Sand and Fog - Not my cup of tea.
Lord of the Rings: Return of the King - Yeah, I'm seeing it.
The Alamo - Sounds great.
The Company - Robert Altman? Pass.
Kill Bill - Much anticipation.
Casa De Los Babys - Not much interest.
My Life Without Me - No.
Cold Creek Manor - Can't wait to see this, although it'll be tough to find fresh material after The Others, What Lies Beneath, Sixth Sense, etc. etc.
Cabin Fever - Looking forward to it.
Wonderland - Definitely worth a look.
Party Monster - Can't wait to see those two paired up.
Elephant - I'll probably wait for DVD.

Scary Movie 3 - Looks hilarious.
Good Boy - Hell no. Looks like Cats & Dogs, without the cats.
House of the Dead - I love zombie flicks, but something seems off with this trailer. I'll still give it a shot.
Intolerable Cruelty - Surprised this was the Coens, as the trailer looked like typical rom-com stuff. Might see it.
Runaway Jury - I'll go unless buzz is terrible.
Brother Bear - Just looks too kid-oriented as opposed to the wide appeal of something like Nemo. Probably catch it at the dollar theater.
Big Fish - Tim Burton returns to quirky material. Yes!!!
The Haunted Mansion - Might be light and inoffensive fun, might be horrible.
Highwaymen - Great looking Hitcher-esque film.
Love Don't Cost a Thing - Seems odd to remake Can't Buy me Love. I'll wait for a trailer before I make a call on this one.
Peter Pan - The story is played out, but there's a nice Harry Potter-ish vibe from the trailer.
