Friend going to France. Any good titles to pick up?

Hi...
Sorry this is rushed, but just found out a good friend of mine is going to Paris, France on Friday. She asked if there was anything she could bring me back, and instantely I thought about DVDs. Heh..what a surprise.

Anyways, sorry if this is addressed somewhere else, but I seriously did not have a chance to read a lot of posts, or do any searching, but was wondering, .... are there any "must have" French movies, or movies that are only available in France that I should include into my collection?

I'm really into everything, but mostly action/adventure, sci-fi, and horror. Right away I thought of "Brotherhood of the wolf" since that is in my want list, but I'm still trying to get a 3 disk copy. So I'm guessing that is out, right?

Anyone have any suggestions? Check out my www link for an idea of what I like. Or on the want list. Or,...just list something that is not available here. :-)

Thanks!

Do you have a region-free player? If you do, I would recommend the following:

Flash Gordon - I love this movie! The French version kicks ass. The subtitles are forced but on my Toshiba 3900 I have found a way to remove them.

Nid De Guepes - French take on Assault on Precinct 13. Not great but a good action movie.

Hope that helps.

Yes I do have a region-free player. I usually play UK Music Video DVDs on it though, and haven't really delved into buying actual movies. Figured this was a good chance to start. :-)
I'll look into those titles you provided.

I did some quick research,...and it looks like I might have to upgrade my copy of "PRINCE OF DARKNESS" to the R2 French version. :-)

Anyone have this R2 title that might be able to agree?

How do you manage to remove forced subs?

Also, They Live R2 France is packed with extras but slightly cropped.

That's the website I've been doing some quick research on. :-)
Yes. ...."They Live" R2 (France) is now on my list. Thought I heard there was a new "They Live" R1 coming out soon? Or is it even out at all? IF not, then I'm getting this in France. Between it being cropped and all the extras,...hard to decide. But I really want to hear the commentary track. :-)

So,....it's on the list.

Ok,....
so this is how my list looks so far...

1. "Prince of Darkness AKA John Carpenter's Prince of Darkness (1987)"
R2_SE__(France)__-_Studio Canal_

2. "They Live AKA John Carpenter's They Live (1988)"
R2_SE__(France)__-_Studio Canal_

3. "Crying Freeman (1995)"
R2_SE__(France)__-_Metropolitan_

4. "13th Warrior (The) (1999)"
R2_(France)__-_Metropolitan / Seven 7 Sept_

Decided to pass on Flash Gordon, cause according to all indications online, it seems like the subtitles are burned in. no?

Would a 4-disc "Brotherhood..." do?:

the 13the warrior if I can recall correctly has forced French subs!!

Brotherhood of the Wolf does not have English subs though presentation is superb!

I would also recommed DOBERMANN (double Polygram disc)-No subs.

La Haine-subs included

Indochine-Double disc-no subs

L'appartement (Cassel/Bellucci) subs provided

****
I could upload a list with about 220 titles...but you have to let me know what genre you prefer (as my dvd's are mostly art house/romance/international)!!!

ah! Is that what

"French HoH Subtitles"

meant?
Wasn't sure what the "HoH" stood for.

Just checked out that 4-disk set for Brotherhood, and if I spoke French, .... I would definately want this one out of all the versions that are out there. Unfortunately, it looks like I will have to continue seeking out the 3 Disk Canadian version instead. Thanks for letting me know this was out there though. I had no idea there was a 4 disk set available.

Hoh has a different meaning.

Flash Gordon does have forced subtitles which I was unable to have removed.... though I tried... Still a great set albeit the subs' presence is distracting.

Thanks for this recommendation! I finally was able to do some research on this title, and it definately looks to be right up my ally. I emailed my friend who is now in France. Hopefully she will check her mail, since she did take her laptop. :-)
Thanks again

I bought this version and it is fantastic. I was also succesfully able to remove the subtitles on my APEX 3201. It took a few attempts, but they are definitely not "burned in." What I did was shut them down from the player menu, not the dvd menu.

If you like the films I recommend the French releases of Sleepy Hollow & Dark City, both of which sound fantastic in DTS.
