My pix from the Liz Phair concert
I know she has a few fans here and a few that hate her.
She did a pretty good show and opened for Jason Mraz. She was not nervous and her voice sounded good. I'd heard that she was mostly doing her new stuff, but last night had a variety from all of her albums. She ended with "Flower" the infamous song where she says "I wanna be your blow job queen". The majority of the audience had never heard the song before and got quite a kick out of it.
She started off with the dorky hat.
It did not flatter her features.
But eventually she took it off and the crowd cheered the move.
Another guitar change.
She's in good shape and got lots of cat calls whenever she switched guitars.

Very nice pictures.
Now if we could only figure out why she is playing
a 1-hour opening set for Jason Mraz....
the guy has one album.
Crazy and stupid touring move.

I have only heard her new song. She looks cute enough and appears to have some talent. Why isn't she more mainstream popular?

"Exile" is one of the best/most important records of the last 20 years. It always sounds fresh to me and I do play it over and over and over again. "Whip Smart" was less satisfying but still really good. And I'm part of that minority that happened to love "Whitechocolatespaceegg", and didn't scream "sellout".
Still, even as a very earnest, devoted Liz fan, it's hard to justify this new record/image/etc. It's just not a good record, and it all seems kinda desperate. Wish I could say otherwise.
However, if she comes anywhere near Lville, I'll definitely be there to see her.

I saw her twice, back in June, when she was touring with the Flaming Lips.
The second night, I was lucky enough to be a furry animal with the Lips, so while I missed Liz' set while getting ready for the Lips show, I did see her backstage a bunch after her set and before the Lips went on.
She was wearing that silly hat, but she was also wearing a hot little shiny black hot pants with fishnet stockings number.
Mmmmm. . . Good times. . .

Liz's people got me a photo pass. I was going to talk with her after the show but blew it off. I'm not sure if she'd remember me anyway.
LONG LIZ STORY AHEAD:
I met her in LA seven or eight years ago when she was at a concert my friends were playing. They were in the band, Material Issue. I wasn't sure why she was there when I spotted her in the crowd. She was dancing very closely with a woman throughout the show. Afterwards I was walking backstage and noticed her behind me. I had my camera and she gripped my lens and said (corny line) "Boy you have a big lens." I responded, "I've got a bigger one than that." And she said, "I'd like to see that sometime." She was quite the flirt.
So then the band, Liz and I went to a club in Hollywood. It was one of those hidden clubs, without a sign, where you enter in the rear. We stayed there for about four hours and she continued to be very forward in her behavior. At one point I was standing and talking with Jim from MI who was sitting in a booth with a guy from the Mighty Lemon Drops (UK band). I was leaning on the back of the booth with my arm. Liz slid underneath so my arm was around her. At this point I reminded myself that I was married and she'd just had too much to drink.
The next day I stopped by the studio where she and MI were recording a Banana Splits cover for a Cartoon tribute cd. After awhile a camera crew was set up to do some promos for the cd. They had the four people sit on a couch and talk while they ate banana splits. Liz had a very short skirt on and this, combined with the sinking couch, made it quite revealing.
There were several guys there that came by to see Liz. One of them said to another, "Dude, I can't stand up." in response to what he was seeing and Liz's licking of ice cream from her fingers.
I took some pix of the interview, but never did print any of them. I need to find those negs someday. The ice cream footage did not air on the video that came out.

"Valerie Loves Me"! Whatever happened with Material Issue?
Great fun informative side story.
I saw Liz Phair when she was touring promoting "Exile" back in 1993 or early 1994 at Smith College (near where I went to school) in Northamptom, MA.
For that concert, Liz wore a little white t-shirt and a red pleated cheerleading skirt. No pics, sorry.

I also saw Liz a few times around 1994. Somewhere I have lots more pix from the show-I may even be the only one to shoot the nude slides she was projecting of herself before she took the stage. Just thought I should archive them for posterity.

So, what did you do that you've met them, Liz Phair, Material Issue, etc. or was this just a one-time thing?
It sounds like you should have a thread just about that, unless you've already covered it here.

No, I liked it, too. I know that not too many people are probably impressed when you name-drop bands like the Mighty Lemon Drops, but I think it's cool. I've only rarely gotten to meet people from my favorite bands, usually only at signings of the few times I bothered to talk my way backstage.

I talked with MI after a show and we got along well. They gave me a pass for all their shows and I ended up seeing them many times after that and would hang out with them b4 and after the show. I took lots of pix of the band and one ended up on the back of a cd. Just met Liz that one night plus the next day-I'm pretty sure she wouldn't remember me now.
From that same LA trip I met a few other interesting bands for more than a few minutes. They were the Doors plus Danny Sugarman(in a wine room at the House of Blues) and Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys (at his house). Also supergroupie Pamela DesBarres (at her house), the wife of Jan Berry of Jan and Dean (at their house), KROQ DJ and legend Rodney Bingenheimer (at the Rock and Roll Denny's) and former Rock promoter Bob Gibson (at the Ritz in Santa Barbara?). He's the guy responsible for the Van Halen no-brown M&M clause and many other things.
