I've always found these scenes kinda cool.
If anybody remembers the trailers for The Bourne Identity they have a shot of matt damon standing on the curb (we are watching for the other side of the street) a car/bus/large moving object passes for a split second and he's gone after it passes.
It seems too fast for him to just run out of the scene or something, do they just edit together a shot of him there and a shot of him off of the set?

My guess would be a locked down camera. Shoot it one time with Damon sitting there and the bus goes by going X mph. Shoot it again with just the bus going by at X mph. At editing time edit them together and there you go. But that is pure guess, but it seems logical to me.

I don't know how they do it in other movies, but there's a documentary on the Bourne Identity DVD that describes exactly how they did this. Basically, Damon was attached via a harness and bungees to the bus. When it passed, a crew person hit a button and the cords were tightened, Damon was now attached to the side of the bus, and carried along with it. They even showed footage of this from the other side. Pretty cool to see.

It's a double take. simple as that. Just like they would make anyone disappear. you shoot it once and shoot it twice. combine the two and ta da, a simple effect.

Are you all sure about the twotake method? While I can understand the bus going X miles an hour both times for consistancey, a lot of times there is just busy stuff in the background that doesn't change. Too much stuff to recreate in an extra run through.

The Bourne Identity pulled this shot off great. I was so impressed with it that after watching the DVD i went back and watched that scene again. The second time i watched it since I was looking for it you can see him crouch down and walk beside the police scooter or whatever it's called. It was all in the timing of when he crouched down that made it so believable.

Simpler stuff like this is what makes it for me.
