Box Office Poker…July 25-27 (HI/LO EDITION!)
Welcome to the Box Office game for those who don’t care about the Box Office: BOX OFFICE POKER! It gives everyone a new reason to read about weekend grosses, and the best part is you don’t have to know anything about the business to play!
Here are the rule…HI/LO particulars are in BOLD
1. Any DVDTalk member can play in any week. Groucho’s Casino is open to all!
2. All players pick a movie that is in current release for the weekend.
3. Each movie can only be chosen once.
4. When the final actual weekend numbers (not the estimates) are posted at www.boxofficemojo.com on Monday, everybody uses the last five digits of their movie’s take to form a poker hand.
5. This week, the pot will be split between the Highest Hand and the Lowest Hand (if any).
6. The high hand is defined as normal, from worst to best: as pair, 2 pair, 3 of a kind, straight, full house, four of a kind, five of a kind.
7. To qualify for the low hand, you cannot have any pairs or any card higher than a 6. The hand with the lowest high card wins…(0-1-2-3-4) is the best possible low hand.
8. If no hands qualify as low, the high hand wins the entire pot.
9. 0 is high “card,” and can be used at either the beginning or end of a straight (0-1-2-3-4 or 6-7-8-9-0).
10. If your film makes less than $10,000 this week, you bust out. But ANY film making 5 figures or more can be a winner…blockbusters and bombs all have a chance at winning!
11. Winner receives points equivalent to the highest grossing film that wasn’t picked by anybody. The points don't matter, just like the part of the Victoria's Secret catalogue where they sell the pants (thanks to littlefuzzy for this joke). This is just for fun (and forum bragging rights, I suppose).
12. If some movies are missing from Box Office Mojo’s list, I will wait on announcing a winner until all the figures are in. In some rare cases, this could delay things for a few days.
An example using the first week’s game:
I chose Bringing Down the House and Numanoid chose Terminator 3. The take for Bringing Down the House was $101,684 for a hand of 0-1-6-8-4 (High Card 8).The take for T3 was $19,477,207, so Numanoid’s hand was 7-7-2-0-7 (three of a kind 7’s). Numanoid won, and collected 690,088 points (the box office take for Swimming Pool, which nobody chose).
Our current chip leaders:
1. Numanoid (690,088 points)
2. jhansla (259,172 points)
Get it? Good…let’s play. Post your picks here…the deadline is Monday July 28 at 12:00am Midnight (Pacific Time).

NEW GAME: Side Bet!
This game is for current chip-holders only, and gives them a chance to gamble their winnings for even more useless points! This means that only Numanoid and jhansla can play this week.
1. To play in the Side Bet game, you must wager 100,000 points. Indicate if you are in or out when you pick your film for the main game.
2. The same film is used for side betting that is used for the main game.
3. The winner of the Side Bet is the player with the highest hand composed of the first five digits of your film’s actual weekend take.
4. Winner takes the entire pot of wagers.
5. Because of the nature of this game, the deadline for picking your film if you participate in the side bet is Sunday July 27 at 12:00am Midnight (Pacific Time).

Due to HORRIFIC planning on my part, somebody made a pick for this round 2 weeks ago (). All other films are fair game:
Trigger: Seabiscuit
Courtesy of www.comingsoon.net, here are the other new films opening this week:
- Masked and Anonymous (NY)
- Buffalo Soldiers (NY, LA)
- Camp (NY, LA, SF)
- Hotel (NY, LA)
- Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life
- Lucia Lucia (limited)
- Mondays in the Sun (NY, LA)
- Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over
Of course, any film currently playing in theaters can be picked, not just new releases…and any film can win!

DVD Talk Hall of Fame
Pirates Of The Caribian please
#12
DVD Talk Ultimate Edition
I'll take Northfork.
#13
DVD Talk Hero
I'll take Bad Boys II because Michael Bay owes me for sitting through both Armageddon and Pearl Harbor.
As far as the side bet goes (getting a little complicated in here, aren't we Groucho?), count me in. What have I got to lose except my status as King of the Dipshites?
