BOX OFFICE POKER…Week 2!!!

Welcome to the Box Office game for those who don’t care about the Box Office: BOX OFFICE POKER! It gives everyone a new reason to read about weekend grosses, and the best part is you don’t have to know anything about the business to play!

Here are the rules:

1. Any DVDTalk member can play in any week. Groucho’s Casino is open to all!
2. All players pick a movie that is in current release for the weekend.
3. Each movie can only be chosen once.
4. When the final actual weekend numbers (not the estimates) are posted at www.boxofficemojo.com on Monday, everybody uses the last five digits of their movie’s take to form a poker hand.
5. The hands are, from worst to best: pair, 2 pair, 3 of a kind, straight, full house, four of a kind, five of a kind.
6. 0 is high “card,” and can be used at either the beginning or end of a straight (0,1,2,3,4 or 6,7,8,9,0).
7. If your film makes less than $10,000 this week, you bust out. But ANY film making 5 figures or more can be a winner…blockbusters and bombs all have a chance at winning!
8. Winner receives points equivalent to the highest grossing film that wasn’t picked by anybody. The points don't matter, just like the part of the Victoria's Secret catalogue where they sell the pants (thanks to littlefuzzy for this joke). This is just for fun (and forum bragging rights, I suppose).
9. If some movies are missing from Box Office Mojo’s list, I will wait on announcing a winner until all the figures are in. In some rare cases, this could delay things for a few days.

An example using last week’s game:

I chose Bringing Down the House and Numanoid chose Terminator 3. The take for Bringing Down the House was $101,684 for a hand of 0-1-6-8-4 (High Card 8).The take for T3 was $19,477,207, so Numanoid’s hand was 7-7-2-0-7 (three of a kind 7’s). Numanoid won, and collected 690,088 points (the box office take for Swimming Pool, which nobody chose).

Our current chip leaders:

1. Numanoid (690,088 points)

Get it? Good…let’s play. Post your picks here…the deadline is Monday July 21 at 12:00am Midnight (Pacific Time).

Due to bad planning on my part, several picks for this week were posted in the last thread (this will no longer be allowed). Here are the picks that have made so far. All other films are fair game:

Blake: Pirates of the Carribean

evenflowddt: Bad Boys 2

ncmojo: League of Extraordinary Gentlemen

Jericho: Bend it Like Beckham

RyoHazuki7: Finding Nemo

gcribbs: Bruce Almighty

GoldenJCJ: The Italian Job

The Bus: Johnny English

Numanoid: Terminator 3 (“Let it roll!”)

Brain Stew: Rugrats Go Wild

Trigger: How to Deal

Cusm: The Hulk

JasonFliegel: T-Rex: Back to the Cretaceous

Iron Chef: Nowhere in Africa

snoogins: Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle

pixyboi: 28 Days Later

Dr_Evil: Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas

BassDude: Whale Rider

Damfino: Winged Migration

DgibFen: The Matrix Reloaded

Venom: The Anarchist’s Cookbook

mano365: 2 Fast 2 Furious

Special note to zerotl and squidget: you’ll have to pick new films as your choices were already taken.

I'll just go ahead and say it now -- and you can quote me after I rake in all of my winnings -- but YOU ARE ALL MY BITCHES!

I rule!

So, um, Blake... any chance you might want to, you know, switch hands with me...

So, a pair beats five of a kind?

Tomb Raider doesn't come out until next week, so you may want to choose another film. Here's the new releases for this week courtesy of www.comingsoon.net:

July 18
- The Anarchist Cookbook (LA)
- Bad Boys II
- Dirty Pretty Things (NY, LA)
- Garage Days (NY, LA)
- How to Deal
- Johnny English
- The Sea is Watching (limited)
- This Thing of Ours (limited)

Only The Sea is Watching and This Thing of Ours are available to be picked. I don't know the screen count for either and can't guarantee that they'd break $10,000.

Cool idea - I'll give it a shot. Not much left though. I think Hollywood Homicide is still available, so I'll go with that.
