In the Mood for Love: A Good Blind Buy?

What are your thoughts on this film? I am definitely into international cinema, and from what I've heard the pace of the film requires some patience. I am really into imagery (I rewind Gangs of New York so that I can see the bible going into the water shot). Since this is the case, is it a good blind buy?

In your case, absolutely. It's an utterly gorgeous film that rewards multipe viewings. I enjoy it more every time I see it. Plus, the soundtrack is one of the best I've ever heard.

Yes. This is right up your alley. The cinematography is beautiful and I didn't find the pace to be that slow. And Criterion did a wonderful job with the dvd.

Yes. Great color usage in shots - purchased it blindly myself.

If you really like sumptuous imagery, I'd recommend several recent international films available on DVD:

Happy Together (Wong Kar-Wai)
Hero (Zhang Yimou)
The Vertical Ray of the Sun (Tran Anh Hung)
Why Has Bodhi-Dharma Left for the East? (Yong-Kyun Bae)
Songs from the Second Floor (Roy Andersson)
Mother and Son (Aleksandr Sokurov)
Beau Travail (Claire Denis)
Trois Couleurs: Rouge (Krystof Kieslowski)

However, many of these aren't blind buys. In fact, films like "Mother and Son" and "Why Has Bodhi-Dharma Left for the East?" can somewhat inaccessible for the average viewer.

I'm really looking forward to Hero...I saw some of the screen captures at IGN, and the film looks BEAUTIFUL...so many extras, great usage of color.

I LOVED ITMFL, but many do not - some friends of mine who are cinematically astute didn't really care for it - for what it's worth. They didn't hate it, but they didn't really care for it either. If you can find it for rent - do that. If you end up liking it, buy it, as it rewards repeated viewings.
