Just saw X: Has Billy Zoom always been that way?
X played a great show. If they're in your area check them out!
Now to my question:
The whole night and I do mean every second, Billy was smiling at the crowd and giving this -eating grin whenever he saw a camera pointed at him. He would just pose, holding his guitar up or he would lean back slightly or crouch a little bit.
It was very funny and very cheesy.
More than a few times he would walk over to John Doe and do the same thing. Just cheese it up for the people and camera. After one time Doe said, "I don't stand by you and do that **** when you're doing leads!".
A few people were getting a little wild with their beer and Exene admonished them, saying "Why don't you point that beer toward the crowd cuz I think they'd enjoy getting wet more than I do."
She wasn't happy about it and told one person "That's two strikes. You payed too much to want to get kicked out."

That's Zoom, alright. I've seen X 3 times with him and his stance has been the same everytime. Cheesy at times, but then I've never heard the man miss a note. One cool thing I saw him do at a show was shoot a few pictures of the audience before the show started. Probably makes for a cool photo album: "Here are shots of the audiences at all of the shows on our tour in 19XX".

Just noticed this in a preview story in the local newspaper:
Doe says. "It's always been about breaking down barriers between bands and audiences."
Zoom took it one further.
His tradmark stage move-staring at the audience while ripping on the guitar-not only broke down barriers between him and his fans, but also led to meeting his would-be wife, Kerry.
"We were playing Cleveland one night when I looked out there, and there she was," Zoom says. "She's from Shaker Heights. Well, we met afterwards. And we ended up getting married.
"That's the best part about playing: Connecting with people in the audience."

I was smiling before entering this thread because I knew what you were going to ask. He's got that trademark stance/smile that makes him even more interesting.

watch Decline of Western Civilization, he does it the entire time they're on stage. The movie was made in 1979. 24 years later, Zoom is still doing his schtick.

That would be the photo if he was looking at the camera. You can't quite tell that he's staring at people w/a cheesy grin on his face.

This was posted in a previous X thread, and it explains things a bit:
http://www.billyzoom.com/niceguy.html
I saw them in Boston a month ago, and I was lovin' it. If there's a cooler person in the history of rock music, then I haven't seen him. Also, as a guitar player myself, I think he's a genius. I think he says in that article something about wanting to take what the Ramones were doing, and adding some more musical depth, but not enough to ruin it---I would say he was incredibly successful at doing just that. Now if only they'd write some new material!!

They were selling t-shirts of Billy Zoom. On the bottom it said Nice Guy. Rock Legend.
Has anyone seen the Buzzcocks? Steve Diggle really enjoys the audience too. He's smiling at everyone the whole night. Big grin.
