Friday's Box Office - Pirates on top, LXG isn't tanking.
Friday's box office intake/total gross (from www.boxofficemojo.com):
1 PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN $14,810,000 $38,805,000
2 THE LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMEN $7,740,000 $7,740,000
3 TERMINATOR 3: RISE OF THE MACHINES $6,097,000 $96,934,000
4 LEGALLY BLONDE 2: RED, WHITE AND BLONDE $4,321,000 $55,188,000
5 FINDING NEMO $2,707,000 $285,310,000
6 CHARLIE'S ANGELS: FULL THROTTLE $2,422,000 $76,810,000
7 SINBAD: LEGEND OF THE SEVEN SEAS $1,510,000 $16,004,000
8 28 DAYS LATER $1,305,000 $25,504,000
9 THE HULK $1,097,000 $122,097,000
10 THE ITALIAN JOB $861,000 $86,958,000
11 BRUCE ALMIGHTY $774,000 $231,590,000
12 WHALE RIDER $306,000 $5,018,000
LXG struck me as a film that wouldn't make a dime (due to lack of hype, negative press, and horrendous reviews) but seems to be off to a good start. Great to see Pirates off to a good start, though it may ressurect a genre that is often flimsy at best (not a big fan, can you tell? haven't seen POTC yet tho). Legally Blonde is on it's way to a second sequel, Nemo is owning The Matrix: Reloaded, and Sinbad isn't completely tanking either - while low, it dropped a mere 13.1% from last weekend (though still low).
28 Days Later... is doing remarkably well, and dropped only 4.1% from last Friday. Whale Rider is up from last Friday.
T3 looks to be taking a 50% hit this weekend (as expected), but being the type of movie it is, I expect it to have pretty good legs in the long run.

Remember, kids are still going to see this movie for the 2nd and 3rd times during the weekdays...there are also other factors for its "legs". Hell, I want to see this now, so I'm sure my $9 will put it over the $300 million mark.

I read somewhere that The In-Laws cost $100 million (I have no idea how)... so with $20 million total gross it's another contender for biggest summer bomb. Sinbad cost $60 million... it should make around $25-35 mil overall.

I can't see how cartoons go overbudget like that. It's not like we actually get to see Brad Pitt. I think I'd actually NOT want to see it because of him.
The theater I went had a pretty big crowd for LXG and it looked like everyone came out satisfied. I was certainly happy with the movie too.
T3 hitting #3. I dunno. I guess it might hit #2 next week but it'll only go back down. Popcorn flicks don't really warrant much replay value in my book. This is of course compared to cult classics like Matrix or LOTR.

Charlie's Angels is still $50m under budget, but remember U.S. figures are 50% of worldwide gross, and I'd expect the popcorn flick to do rather well. Once it hits home video it will find fans -- this movie is sadly the most over-hyped yet underrated movie this summer. Won't make a ton of money, but it should at least break even.
