The "I'm glad I have the laserdisc" posts?

It's almost inevitable. Nearly every "when is this movie going to be on dvd" thread. In every "I wish this disc had more extras" thread.

Someone starts a thread looking for a response of why isn't movie A on dvd and says how much he/she wishes it was and many times the first several responses are:

"Glad I bought it on laserdisc "
or
"You should have bought the laserdisc "
or
"DVD? I've still got my beautiful Criterion laserdisc right here "
or
"However good the dvd is, MY laserdisc copy will still have better sound "

The offenders always love to leave a smiley face as well......as if their joy of them owning the laserdisc copy of the movie is infectious and is supposed to make the thread-starter and other readers happy. Nine times out of ten this post is completely ignored and not responded to. Ten times out of ten it comes across as a slap in the face and an unneeded thread crap.

Soooooo, why put it?

Just random thoughts on this dreary Monday morning.

Apparently you don't have a laserdisc player.

It's just typical Internet one-ups-manship. A good comeback for remarks like this is "Oh yeah? Well I slept with your WIFE!"

Maybe it's there so that the initial poster may be interested to know that his favorite movie is available on laserdisc. If he is so inclined he may be willing to pick up a cheap LD player and LD of the movie off Ebay or somewhere so he could enjoy it now instead of twiddling thumbs?

Yeah, but that will just spoil it for the rest of us, who really did sleep with his wife.

No I don't have a laserdisc player but can my wife cheat on me with one of you to get your laserdisc player?

Nice suggestion by Sparks by the way, I may take him up on it.

Get a laserdisc player or get over it.

I'm not jealous about anything Darkside, I have never done a "why isn't this movie on dvd yet" thread but had read many recently that all had these similar responses. I just don't see it adding anything to the discussion when it's done. I see no need in me purchasing a laserdisc player or "getting over" anything.

Says who??????? Those persons without a LD player should buy one if they want these not-on-DVD films.

Every day I'm so happy I have both a region free player and an LD player.

So, you actually think that many people here have wives? I would think the opposite. Although I'm married, so what does that say about my opinion?

That's right, it means my opinion is never heard.

You don't. Others might.

So, I think I'll watch my widescreen Kafka tonight.

Point being... this is a DVD site, nobody gives a rats' ass about vhs or ced., or laserdisc. IT'S IRRELEVANT!

It would be like going to a Star Wars forum and discussing Spider-Man -- it's not the topic at hand, just as laserdiscs are not our topic at hand.

Well, we do talk about books, sports, video games, sex, and just about anything else you can imagine on this DVD site so I don't see your point.

When laserdiscs are mentioned its always seemed relevant to the topic in my experience. Maybe I've missed the threads where it wasn't. Someone will ask about certain features or movies not available and the laserdisc that has those features or is available is mentioned. Its information for those of us that didn't know and were looking for that movie and its very relevant. LD is the father of DVD and the two do have reason to be discussed on this forum. BTW, its very seldom it even comes up in a topic and I'm surprised anyone is bothered by the occasional LD reference. Its not just someone trying to show off. Hell, you could accuse half of the posts on this forum of that.

There are other areas for those though

As an example, it gets annoying when someone posts asking about Star Wars and a smartass says "I don't care when they come to DVD, I have the laserdics" Same goes for others "I don't care about the DVD, I have the laser" So what? Did we ask?

Gee, that helps and I learn so much from that.

I always preferred " The jerk store called, and the're running out of you!"

But that never works for me....SERENITY NOW!

Those are the exact posts I had in mind when I created this thread Guesswho. I didn't mean to come across that the posts where people are pointing out that the Laserdisc version has more features are useless. It was meant to target the posts that I have seen many times that GuessWho refers to. An example I recall is "Proud Laserdisc owner for 74 months ". When someone is asking about when a title is coming to dvd, they just couldn't give a damn how many months someone else has owned the laserdisc for. That has nothing to do with the question asked and comes across as someone just being an arrogant jerk! Those are the kind of posts I was referring to.

Hopefully noone thinks I have anything against LD. My uncle owned a player as I was growing up and I would visit him because he always had the newest movies and the biggest television around. He was the one who educated me about widescreen when I was 6. I'll always have a soft spot for LD though my parents never allowed me to purchase a player because they said I needed to concentrate on my schoolwork. They even confiscated the television set (which is one of the reasons I visited my uncle! )

Now I'm in college and own 400+dvd's. Perhaps it's due to a bit of always wishing I owned as many LD's as my uncle did. How the times change!

To which a good reply is...

"What's the difference - you're they're best seller!"

Glad I have that episode on laserdisc.
