Why do you own the full screen versions of Minority Report, Harry Potter and Philosophers Stone, and Jurassic Park/Lost World?

Just for that I'm giving your collection a

The 2 Jurassic Park movies were the first DVDs I had. I had no idea what the difference between wide and full screen was.

Minority Report was a gift last Christmas. It wasn't really worth returning for the FS. I really wish I had WS though.

I could only find Harry Potter at a supermarket and they only carry FS.

Oh Well.

Why do you care what others think about your collection?

Pretty mainstream and bland.... looks like the typical collection of a 19 yr old. Not being mean or anything, but looks like the typical top 20 at Blockbuster.

Of the 116 titles in your collection, I see less than 10 that I would own (or do own). There are a bunch of stinkers in there ("Changing Lanes," the live-action "Grinch," the "I Know What You Did" movies), and there are some really bizarre choices. How could you own "Dogma" and "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back" but not "Clerks" or "Chasing Amy?" Totally confusing. Also, the vast majority of the films are from the '90s or later (which I guess accounts for you having the "Cape Fear" remake, but not the superior original). I'm guessing this means you're on the young side, and have yet to discover many of the classics. Maybe it's time to do so, before you waste too much money on DVDs like "Mission: Impossible 2," "Final Destination," "Don't Say a Word" or "Miss Congeniality."

On the other hand, you do own a handful of quality movies and TV shows, like "Catch Me If You Can," "E.T.," "Family Guy," "Rear Window" and "The Royal Tennebaums," so there might be hope for you yet.

If you have a mainstream interest in movies, it's a decent collection. I'm sure you get a lot of enjoyment out of them.

Maybe in time, you'll want to broaden your movie experience and "push the envelope" a bit. There are new and old threads asking for recommendations for a specific genre (ie horror, musical, weird..) and those are always good to check out for something new, different and exciting.

You really asked for it starting this thread. To be accepted here you must have at least 16 region 78 dvds directed by directors like Stuahnfahasburg Kiestaven with no english subtitles. Mainstream movies are frowned upon. If you like the movie, you should buy it. If you dont, dont buy it. It bothers me when we have these "Recommend me a Criterion dvd" threads by somebody who just wants to be accepted.

Exactly. Oh, and NO Michael Bay, NO Ben Affleck, and NO pointless action movies. However, you must have over 10 Criterions.

IF NOT, YOUR COLLECTION SUCKS. Give up collecting, now.

If you could possibly let me know how much enjoyment your collection provides you, I would be more than happy to let you know how good it is. Without that information, I'd honestly just be guessing.

If I have to classify it, I think I could best sum it up by saying that it looks like a wide assortment of titles that you'd be happy to spend your money on.

Exactly. If you're only buying titles so we'll be impressed on here, that's stupid. I buy movies I like (or that my S/O likes), so even if no one else in the world liked my collection, I'd still be f'ing in love with it.

Pros of your collection:

-A handful of very good movies - Fight Club, Royal Tenenbaums, Gangs of New York, LotR, Rear Window, Road to Perdition, Minority Report etc.

-Wide range of genres

Cons:

-Ful screen titles. Shame.

-some truly crappy movies (more than a handful) - American Pie 2, The Grinch, Fast and the Furious, Final Fantasy, Haloween 4, 5, 6, 8, I know what..., I still know what..., Jumanji, Tomb Raider, Miss Congeniality, The Mummy/Mummy Returns, Scary Movie, Scary Movie 2, Scream 2, 3, Spawn, Ultimate Fights (wtf?)

- Not enough obscure titles. I know a lot of people see this view as snobbish, but I think a good mix of obscure into the mainstream makes for a more varied and interesting collection. Suggestions: Dark City, Kalifornia, King of Comedy, Following, The Changling, One False Move, Ravenous, Trainspotting.

- Not enough intelligent movies. Try: Memento, Adaptation, 12 Monkeys, Any Lynch, Any Gilliam.

- Not enough Kubrick. Shining is a good start. Look into: 2001, Clockwork Orange, Full Metal Jacket, Dr. Strangelove.

- Not enough Scorsese. You only have Cape Fear and GoNY. You need: King of Comedy, Taxi Driver, Goodfellas, Raging Bull. (You might want to hold out on SEs of Goodfellas and Raging Bull. I am).

- You seem to like horror so you should look into some better stuff. try: Evil Dead 1, 2, and 3, Suspiria, The Thing, Dead Alive, Re-Animator, The Vanishing (original).

- You seem to like comedy, but you don't have The Big Lebowski, Office Space, or any Monty Python. Look into those.

- Need more De Niro (see the scorsese suggestions)

Not enough obscure films. Only 1 Criterion!! If you like all your movies then your collection is fine! A lot of DVDTalkers will tell you how Spirited Away is the greatest animated movie ever and it will be a cold day in hell before I ever own that movie. Just buy what you like.

Nice. Looks like you're not afraid to experiment. Dabbling in euro-horror is always a good thing.

It's a nice starting collection, you should try more older movies and more foreign movies. More Hitchcock and maybe some Kurosawa.

No offense to some of you -cough-caiman-cough- but, are you friggin serious? Do you seriously own a movie just because of who directed it? or who starred in it? What happened to buying a movie because you liked it? Oh, well, this is a Kubrick film....don't mind that it sucked my a$$...he did it, so I must have it.

To kds405, nobody here can rate your collection, except you....unless of course, you're only collecting for the approval of somebody else. Notice that my collection is not in my sig, like many of these guys. That's because I really don't care whether anybody here likes a single one of my 650+ movies. I like them, my kids like them, my wife likes them. I'd say there are at least 200 titles that sit on my shelves that I personnaly would never own, but my wife or kids love them. Anyway, now that my rant is over, enjoy your collection. It looks good (other than the full frame garbage) if that's what you like.

So would Criterion DVDs like Chasing Amy & Armageddon end up counting towards the 10?
