What is your favorite tribute album?

A recent reference to the Return of the Grievous Angel Gram Parsons tribute album led me to bring in a couple tribute CDs today and wonder about other great tribute albums.

By "tribute album" I mean an album dedicated to one artist (or songwriter/songwriting team).

My two favorites are the Parsons CD mentioned above and the Victoria Williams tribute/benefit album Sweet Relief. I don't own any CDs by either of the tributed artists, though I own plenty by the artists doing the tributing. I guess tribute albums of your favorite artists just mess with your own image of the songs too much to let you enjoy it too much.

I also like the Bruce Springsteen "Nebraska" tribute, the 2nd "Sweet Relief" album (Joe Henry), and the recent Hank Williams tribute.

Any others?

My favorite is far and away Return of the Grievous Angel. It's an amazing disc, and one of the few that actually gives tribute albums a good name.

Some other good ones...
Real: The Tom T. Hall Project
Sweet Relief: The Songs of Victoria Williams
Sharin' in the Groove: The Music of Phish (features a wide variety of artists...Dave Matthews, the Boredoms, Lake Trout, the Wailers, Los Lobos, and many more)

These are 3 of my faves (Grievous Angel being tops), although I just bought the Nebraska one so it hasn't yet sunk in. I will add, as competition for Grievous Angel for my top spot:

Beat the Retreat - Richard Thompson tribute album (songs by X, REM, Bonnie Raitt, Bob Mould, Los Lobos, Dinosaur Jr., David Byrne, Shawn Colvin, Blind Boys of Alabama, and others). If you like Richard Thompson (or a lot of these artists), you MUST buy it.

I like the "Another Damned Seattle Tribute Album".

Also must 2nd The Bridge (Soul Asylum's cover is amazing on that!) and Rise Above.

Others that I like a whole bunch:

Less Than Jake's Gease tribute ("Greased")
Aerosmith: (can't remember the name, but it's a double CD and has Electric Frankenstein & Atomic Bitchwax on it)
Radio Birdman's both tribute CDs.
Misfits: "Hell On Earth"
both volumes of the DFFD (Dictators) tribute CD

I'm going to cheat, and say that my absolute favorite "Tribute" album is the Randy Rhoads Tribute album...the live Ozzy album that featured the incredible work of Randy on it. However, I'm fairly sure that doesn't meet the requirements put forth in this thread, so I'll go with something else as well.

Nativity In Black: Tribute to Black Sabbath, both volumes 1 and 2. Just some very cool covers (some sound are very similar to original tunes, while others are almost remakes) of their various albums, and I think between the two volumes you have one song that's the same, but covered by a different artist. I could be wrong though, there may be NONE that overlap. Let me check and list here (after going through that, looks like no overlapping songs, but some overlapping artists):

Volume 1:
After Forever - Biohazard
Children of the Grave - White Zombie
Paranoid - Megadeth
Supernaut - 1000 **** DJ's
Iron Man - Ozzy Osbourne w/Therapy?
Lord of This World - Corrosion of Conformity
Symptom of the Universe - Sepultura
Wizard - Bullring Brummies (Iommi, Geezer Butler w/ Rob Halford)
Sabbath Bloody Sabbath - Bruce Dickinson (w/ Godspeed)
N.I.B. - Ugly Kid Joe
War Pigs [Live] - Faith No More
Black Sabbath (From the Satanic Perspective) - Type O Negative

Volume 2:
Sweet Leaf - Godsmack
Hole in the Sky - Machine Head
Behind the Wall of Sleep - Static-X
Never Say Die - Megadeth
Snowblind - System of a Down
Electric Funeral - Pantera
N.I.B. - Ozzy w/ Primus
Hand of Doom - Slayer
Under the Sun - Soulfly
Sabbra Cadabra - (hed) pe
Into the Void - Monster Magnet
Iron Man (This Means War) - Busta Rhymes

For a little spin, I'm going to go with Phish's halloween tribute to the Beatles' White Album. They have done other albums also, including Remain In Light and Quadrophenia among others.

The White Album tribute is my favorite though, absolutely beautiful.

My faves:
Cover Me (Bruce Springsteen)
If I Were A Carpenter (The Carpenters)
For The Love Of Harry (Harry Nilsson)

And on the other end of the scale, the worst tribute I've ever heard was 'Burning London' (The Clash). Other than Cracker's take on "White Riot", the rest of this was a mess...
