Any Canadian Music Fans?

I am originally from Canada and from time to time I bring up a group that my husband will look at me and say, "Who???" I love Canadian music groups and was wondering how many of you fell the same? Do you just know the 'more famous' ones or do you know some of the obscure ones? Just curious.

</small>If they are obscure then I doubt I have heard of them!

I like April Wine & Rush and once saw Triumph many moons ago! Not a big Bryan Adams fan... is he Canadian? Celine Dion? No thanks! BTO? Probably only the one song!

So, who are these "obscure" bands? Do you mean bands that charted locally but failed to "break through" south of the border (or anywhere else)?

How about a list giving an idea of their time period and musical genre? Time to edumacate us, perhaps!

Well I am in Canada.
My fave Canadian band is BIG SUGAR, they are amazing. Check them out. Other great ones are SLOAN and Northern PIKES.

Other ones I like include your typical April Wine, Helix, Loverboy, Cory Hart, Trooper, Chilliwack , Headpins, Toronto, Streethart, Kim Mitchell, Prism.......

I like Max Webster. They would have fit right into the american AOR scene in the late 70's/early 80's, but they never did make it.

They aren't obscure to some folks, I know, but groups like Luba and Kim Mitchell. I also introduced my husband to the music of Ron Hynes. He now is a huge fan and one time when we went back to visit, Ron dedicated a song to us at one of his gigs.

I miss living back up North and hearing some bands I may not hear of down here. I am always sure to listen to the local stations when I go home to visit. Most of the time I pick up a new cd or two.

I guess I made my post so vague just so people would have room to come up with whatever they wanted on their own. It does not have to be a group that charted, but I love to even hear of bands that I may not have heard about myself. I like to hear about and experience bands I have not heard of before. Canadian bands rock!

Well, to be honest... I think I could list off more cheesy bands like Triumph than awesome stuff like Neil Young. But, I'm sure there are smaller bands similar to Sloan I'm unaware of. I used to watch Much Music on a sat feed at work 10 years ago and did see some cool videos.

The Dears are excellent. And what I've heard of Hot Hot Heat isn't bad.

I like a song I heard by Matthew Good Band but I can't remember the name of it.

Sarah McLachlan is one of my favorites.

I guess we will see a new album from her when
hell freezes over. (L)

I guess I'll be the first to come out and say that I like many of the Constellation Records bands (Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Do Make Say Think, A Silver Mt. Zion, Fly Pan Am) and a couple others here and there, namely The New Pornographers and Broken Social Scene.

Back when MuchMusic was cool [around '98-'99]*, I discovered Ivana Santilli, the Philosopher Kings & Love Inc..

Other than the initial releases that I bought after I discovered them, I haven't heard anything from any of them.

* [I don't know if it's a regional thing, but last year they became "MuchMusicUS" or somethingorother...and NOW they're "FUSE" While I WILL give 'em props for playing more vids, every time I turn on the friggin' thing, I see one of the 30 videos that's on MTV's rotation.]

I really like the Swollen Members, Sloan, and Big Sugar.

Bran Van 3000 and the New Deal are two of my favorite bands...

Swollen Members (Bad Dreams & Balance)

I sometimes also listen to Kardinal Offishall.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Snow yet. Reggae at it's finest.

Hey what about Men Without Hats (Safety Dance)? Or Canadian punk like N.O. Means No, DOA, Teenage Head and the Diodes?

I really like Matthew Good. He's the most talented Canadian musician at the moment IMO.

Four/fifths of The Band were from Canada. I also like Neil Young a lot, and Leonard Cohen too.

Canadian artists I like: Matthew Good, The Headstones, Treble Charger, Sloan, Voivod and Gob. I've only heard a couple songs from The Deers so far, but they sound promising.
