Metallica...St. Anger...&...the TRUTH...

Ok.

It's been highly debated here on DVD Talk whether people are saying St. Anger sucks the big one for reasons OTHER than just plain 'ol sucking..

My question is this..

Is there truly some part of you that might be harboring resentment against Metallica and you're exercising it on St. Anger..?

Or do you think it truly blows chunks on its own..?

Be truthful..

well, I suppose you could select "No, the album's not that bad...i'm just sick & tired of all the drama.".

but since you think that [and i'm sure you've voiced your opinions in the other various Metallica/St. Anger threads] this poll isn't really for you*...

sorry.

* since you LIKE it...

I really enjoy the album. I've liked all of their output, though. I don't see why everyone hates it so much. Is it resentment about the Napster situation or because they never released Master of Puppets: The Sequel?

Here's the thing. I actually supported Metallica and Lars in the Napster decision. It's their music.

But, from what I've heard so far.. this album sucks ass. I wanted to like it!

Downloaded it last night for the heck of it. Along with Kill 'Em all and Ride the Lightning.

It really sucks. No resentment whatsoever.

I like it but don't love it (but everytime I listen to it, I like it more, so maybe I'm on the road toward loving it). I'll be honest, I have no problem at all with the production (I've bought alot of indie metal albums over the years and have heard far far worse production) but I'll admit that the lyrics are somewhat weak (but don't care so much because I listen to Metallica because of the music not the lyrics).

A mixed bag:

The good:
Some cool riffs and changes
No ballads
No Hammett solos

The bad:
Lyrics are horrible
Drums sound like garbage cans.

Verdict:
? I'm not sure. The first time I listened to it, while I was putting together a cabinet, I hated it. But since then, I have been listening to it when I exercise/lift, and it fits that activity quite well.

Summary: Not an album for all people, or even all times.

As I mentioned in the other thread, there are a few bands/songs that have the garbage can sounding drums
no doubt
red hot chili peppers
nickleback

So metallica isn't the first band to ever use this device.

I've been a Metallica fan since their first album, and in my opinion this one is the absolute worst.

As far as measuring against other albums put out this year, it's average, since they seem to want to sound like the average current bands...

I like it. Is it great? Nah. But fun. Better than the past 10 years of fluff though.

So does everyone that bash it base it solely on 1 listen? Just curious.

I find the album terrible, and I've liked a lot of the band's previous stuff. Anybody who claims that those who dislike (or despise) St. Anger do so only because they "don't understand or tolerate true metal" or "don't want Metallica to change" is way off base.

I think it is a good album, I've only listened to it about 4 or 5 times. I will not pass judgement on a album till I've listened to it 20 - 30 times or so. (unless it really sucks) It was worth the $9.99 I paid for it at K-mart, and I love the DVD.

The cynic in me thinks that Lars & James may have gotten SOOOO pissed off at both the cries of "sell out" and the criticism of the band over the Napster issue that they tried to see just how bad an album that they could put out and still have it sell.

You know that old saying about Iron Maiden back in the 80's and Metallica ever since, "They could fart into a microphone and the album would still sell over a million copies." I'm sure that James & Lars know that they have an automatic million copies sold, and just about two million if there's actually music on the album.

It all ALMOST fits when you think about it - they went the total opposite direction of being "sell outs," and made an album that a lot of people HONESTLY think is garbage.

Did they INTENTIONALLY make a bad album?

Where's Oliver Stone? Maybe he can do a movie about the making of St Anger.

Well, I've heard it at least 25 or 30 times by now. I love it, it's different just like every Metallica album has been different from the previous. Which is one of many reasons why I love them so damn much, they continually change direction and aren't afraid to try something new. I respect that a lot, cuz they easily could have sold millions just by doing Master of Puppets or Black album sequals.

I don't agree with everything Metallica have done over the years on a non-musical front, but I also don't judge them by anything other than the music.

For me, there is no better band. Nothing hits me as hard as they do. They are not for everybody, and were never meant to be. And this album is REALLY not for everybody, I only wish that so much of the "other" stuff didn't play into peoples opinions so much.

Nice thread topic though
