PSP Game Prices and Pre-PSP Console Revealed

According to reports, game prices are going to be in the $25-$35 range. Sounds about right in comparison to GBA games. Of course, this was announced by Sony Europe, but hopefully the prices will hold across regions. Also, it has been revealed that a portable gaming system (code name "E.T.") was being worked on and shelved right before release. I don't like the fact that it was "download only" and I'm glad that it never came out.

The Sony Portable That Never Was

June 17, 2003 - Sony set our imaginations on fire at E3 this year with the announcement of its PlayStation Portable hardware. Wide screen gaming and movies, MP3 playback, network connectivity -- the promised list of features for this thing makes us want to play it now!
And had Sony's original plan for the portable market gone through, we may indeed have been playing the PSP now, or something similar to it.
Thanks to an article at Japan's Nikkei Biztech news service, we've learned of an insider secret that's been kept under wraps for two years now. According to the site, Sony had a portable system in development for planned release in 2001. The hardware was codenamed E.T. and featured a casing around the size of Nintendo's Game Boy Advance system, a color LCD and input for Sony Memory Sticks. The plan was for games to be downloaded (for a fee, of course) to the Memory Sticks via kiosks set up at game retailers.
Sony itself was developing the hardware under direct control of Sony chairman Nobuyuki Idei and president Andou Kunitake, minus any input from Sony Computer Entertainment. Work begain in 1998 and the company had an experimental version ready by 2000. Domestic heavy hitters including Square and Capcom were even working on software.
However, the product never saw the light of day. In June of 2001, Sony Computer Entertainment stepped in with the opinion that the company should place its all behind the new PS2 console, and that the time was not right for the release of new portable hardware. Work on the project apparently ended at that point.
One person familiar with the ET project commented to Nikkei, "Why did Sony choose to develop a portable system on their own? If they had worked together with SCE, the project would not have had such difficulties."
Definitely one for the vault (right next to all those SNES CD-Rom games and the Sega Saturn upgrade cartridge).

Still skeptical. If they are smart about this, and debut this at $99.99, or even as much as $129.99, I MIGHT consider it if the launch games are good. If its over $149.99, they can forget about it. By the time this thing launches (Christmas next year?), im sure the new Gameboy will be out, and will sell for the usual $99.99 the last 3 versions have sold for.
Also, Kudos on the game prices. $25-35 is a great price for a PSP game. Remember, GBA games at launch for $29.99-$39.99. Hopefully this new pricing information will stick true till the systems launch.

Both Nintendo and Sony agree, and have said, that they are going after two different types of consumers. Of course Nintendo will lose market share, but not enough to divert profits.
