Really, ever since Vice city came out, a lot more younger kids have wanted to hear more 80's music. Has Vice City really had that much of an impact on today's youth to enjoy music from the 80's?

Exactly. I recall listening to KROQ during the Flash back lunch hour and someone requested "the song from Vice city". I was wondering why folks didn't know Flock of Seagulls? I mean it was a pretty obvious song. Just the other day I heard some kids talking about some of the songs in it and they really seemed to like them, but didn't know groups who were very simple to point out. My question is has Vice City and music on games really had this much effect on kids by exposing them to a brand of music they would normally not have been exposed to
Yeah keyser, I know. But I figure someone who is into Sade has really no taste in music, So I can't count you in as being wise about your music choices in the 80's..
I lived through them.

But I understand what you're saying, kids do seem to be into 80's music more. A friend of mine said 80's music sucked, and then got VC and suddenly, he's a convert. Strange.

Count in as a 80's kid. I absolutely love 80's music. Most of the time I prefer it over todays music. Good stuff...
I guess you know your age when you put it on the classic rock station and they play 80's rock and hair bands. Where did time go?

I'm with rgarcia. I'm only 22 but I had three older siblings so I was familar with the 80's music during the period. Now I still enjoy it. Hearing it in Vice City is a nice throwback to those days of watching MTV with my older siblings during the 80's. I generally listen to older music anyway though so it's not that far of a leap for me.

GTA: DooWop City? Urgh!
But some Starsky and Hutch *wakka wakka* guitar style retro 70's version could be cool... GTA has always bugged me with it's wooden crate free environments.
Pedestrians carrying sheets of glass across the street! Or unloading Ryder trucks... that would be cool

Music tends to come back into "retro" style about 20 years after the fact. In the 90's it was all about 70's retro. Now it's about the 80's. In 10 years 90's music will be back.
I think this has less to do with one video game than with the usual cyclical fads.

To kids, anything that's not "new" is crap. That's probably why I saw a kid carry about 100 NES and Genesis games (most in the box with manuals) into a Gamestop wanting store credit. When the employee told him that he couldn't give him credit for those games, the kid threw them into a trash can. Complete copies of Metroid and Phantasy Star 2, among others.
Anyway, I imagine that the music in Vice City became "cool" due to its association with the game. Many are probably oblivious to the fact that these songs were around long before the game came about.

Actually, I think the 80s have been "cool" since the 90s..
I didn't get a PS2 until April/May. [got a real good deal on eBay] This was around the time Toys 'R Us had their "Buy 2, get 1 free" promo. GTA:VC was one of the games I bought. When I first put it in, I was totally prepared to eBay it or something...but 40 minutes in I got hooked.
Hard.
Besides the gameplay, what helped hook me was the soundtrack. All those memories flooding back...
SIGH.

I liked Transformers, He-Man, GI Joe, but also liked listening to The Smiths, The Dead Kennedies, and Love & Rockets. There used to be a great alternative music video channel with some awesome music.

I hate 80's music.
About the only music I like from the 80s is some punk (bad religion, minor threat, etc.) some metal (metallica, anthrax, etc) and some rock stuff like U2.
All that Devo, Pet Shop Boys new wave crap is terrible IMO.
