Broken TV, should I repair or replace?

My TV just died. It is a 31" GE model that I purchased 6 years ago. It has served me well in this time, but now I face a dilemma.

Do I repair or replace?

I paid $425 for this TV new at Circuit City. As I understand, similar sized models still go for around the same price. Any idea what repairs cost on these things? I'll describe the trouble with it. When I plug it in, the TV won't turn on and there is only a high pitched tone coming from inside the unit.

I might also consider purchasing a widescreen HDTV. Oh what to do!

I guess it all depends on how much it costs to repair it, if its under $100 then it might be worth it to repair, anything over and I think you should get a new TV.

I always like to use situations like this to buy a new item. Since you're considering a widescreen HDTV, this is a no-brainer

Maybe I should buy a new one. I was at Best Buy last night drooling over the Toshiba 57". It had a price tag of $1999. Hmmmm.

Buy a new one. Similar sized TV's might go for about the same price, but they won't be similar quality. In general, TV's are much better than they were 6 years ago in the same price range.

Go with a new W I D E S C R E E N set if it's in the budget. You will not regret it... I've owned mine for over a year now and love it. Oh, and your DVD collection will be happy... Just ask em'.

replace!

repairing will be an average of $65/hour, and i gaurentee it will take at least 2-3 hours just to open it up and close it back up. if something is WRONG, and it needs to be fixed, look at another 1-2 hours on the minumum. at 5 hours (which is average for what my store does for tv repairs), you are looking at $300 to fix a tv. get a new one without a doubt.
