Weird 8 title limit at DVDSoon?

I've never before shopped at DVDsoon. I gather from reading through here that IF one sticks to in-stock titles, they are pretty safe.

They now have free shipping only if you buy $100 or more in canadian dollars. Yet when I try to put more than 8 titles at once in my cart, I get the following message:

"You have 8 titles or 2 identical titles in your cart already"

This means I can't get over $100 without buying some spendier titles, which I don't want to do.

Anyone have any information about this, or related advice about DVDsoon?

TIA, Dave

OK, t http://www.dvdsoon.com/tou.xml#restrictions , one reads:

"DVDSoon.com sells only to end users, thus, an order can only contain 8 DVDs and / or 2 copies of a single title."

That's just silly. End users can buy 10-50 DVDs at a pop easily, or even more--especially with a free shipping offer. Seems to me this is a way to keep themselves from having to honor that free shipping committment.

I recently made two orders with free shipping.

The first had The Pianist (2 disc), Father of the Bride (original), 25th Hour, Dances With Wolves (SE), and 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (SE).

The second, which I should get soon has Once Upon A Time in America (SE), Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (SE), Buffy S4, The Paper Chase and Flight of the Phoenix.

Granted, some of those are fairly high, especially Buffy, but I easily got over 100CAD with 5 titles each. To reach 100CAD with eight titles, they have to average only 12.50CAD each (9.20USD). That's a pretty low price and I don't see how an upper limit of eight DVDs makes it hard to reach 100CAD.

Their rule may be silly (I agree that it is) but it is also silly to say that it keeps them from honoring their free shipping offer.

And BTW, I have placed advance orders with them many times with absolutely no problems. All of the above were not yet released when I ordered them.

Edited for typo.

They could be trying to keep credit card fraud to a minimum also.

Eight DVD's seems like a pretty fair limit to me. However, with the restrictions, they should change the rules on the free shipping promo.

Thanks for the replies!

movielib, you make a good point--I spoke too quickly addressing their free shipping offer. My point was that since there's no reason to believe that a retail buyer would limit themselves to 8 titles (who else does anything like this?), the motivation is probably to stop people from loading up on cheaper titles, like the Fox $10 MSRP titles that are only $5 there.

Thanks for sharing your experiences, and your title choices. Glad to hear advance orders have been no problem. Perhaps I'll give them a try...

Does anyone know if the 8 title policy predates the change to $100 minimum for free shipping?

I have used DVDSoon for most of my DVD buys the last couple of years. As long as I have been using them 8 per order has been their policy. I don't have any problems reaching the $100, but for a little while they bumped it to $150 and that was almost impossible unless you ordered a box set. Their sales must have gone down because they changed it back after not too long.

I also have had no problems with preorders, customer service, etc. I don't mind waiting on my DVDs to get good deals, and I often get preorders before street date.

Thanks louiseb, that's encouraging. I'll give them a shot.

Given their perculiarities, It would be worth having a "good bargains at DVDSoon" thread, covering box sets and super-cheap titles to optimize $100 orders.

A lot of people don't like to preorder at DVDSoon because they charge your account right away instead of when shipped. That has never bothered me, and I've never had a bad experience with them. Preorders are where the best deals are, especially when they first post an item. Often the price gradually goes up once posted, sometimes the best price is only there a day or two.

Remember, these DVDs have to cross the border. Some companies like to work a little fraud with customs by manipulating how things are sent and keeping the value/size down is an excellent way to do that.

Thanks louiseb, interesting how no one in this thread has been displeased with them.

LittleDick, you're suggesting this is why they limit it to 8? that seems a reasonable guess...
