I never understood why there are two covers

the one listed above, and the one I own, which actually states "Red Edition" on the top, and has the film's two protagonists drenched in blood, looking off to the left superimposed over Lionel's zombie mom. The back is pretty much identical

and then there is this Spanish uncut DVD edition

What are the differences in the two releases (if any) besides the covers?

Apparently there are 4 editions ... according to this page http://www.dvd-forum.at/dvd-reviews/braindead.htm and my crappy translation:

- Laser Paradise (Red Edition) - crappy image, Dolby Surround only and German dub only
- Laser Paradise (Red Edition) 2nd Imprint - identical to the Blood Edition
- Laser Paradise/ ASTRO (Blood Edition) - excellent Image quality, original language, trailers... (was titled "Dead Alive")
- Laser Paradise/ ASTRO (Christmas Edition) - identical to the Blood Edition...(title is also "Dead Alive")

Pls. don't ask me which cover is which version, I don't have the faintest idea ...

The one pictured in Giles post is from Manga films out of Spain. The times are identical, but I don't know how picture quality compares to the German versions.

Let me try to enlight you

First of all: Forget the Spanish - it's uncut but the picture quality isn't as good as the German.

The German Edition:
-------------------------

The old edition with the crappy image should be no longer sold from any e-tailer.

The rerelease with better engl. Surround Sound has a much better picture quality and is know under the titel "Dead Alive" Blood Edition.

Now the new edition is sold with the cover of the first edition! Normally you should no longer get the old edition but if you are not sure - go for the Blood Edition.

And then there is the Peter Jackson Box... which includes Braindead, Meet the Feebles and Bad Taste.

http://www.dtm.at/dvdpeterjacksoncollection.htm

The Braindead release in this Box is anamorphic (better quality but loss of some picture information) and has a German dts Track and of course all the features of the Blood Edition.

See, I managed to point to the correct "best" edition without saying a single word.

The UK-R2 Universal Release (the most recent release 2002 or 2003) is uncut and in proper aspect.

Not sure about anamorphic. Unfortunately it is in mono unlike the US-R1 Trimark.

I remember getting it for under $10

Also, the image quality on the R2 is OK. The R1 (cut) still has the best PQ that I've seen so far. But, I opted for the uncut 4% sped up OAR version....

Studio: Universal Pictures Video
DVD Release Date: 19 August, 2002
Run Time: 99 minutes PAL = 104 minutes NTSC (uncut)
