- Hitchcock (if you count his British films seperately from his Hollywood studio work)
- Fellini ("8 1/2" is my all time favorite movie)
- Lang ("M" and "Metropolis" especially)
- Herzog (his 'Nosferatu' update in particular)
- Seijun Suzuki (esp. "Branded to Kill")

This week it's:

Wenders
Godard
Renoir
Kieslowski
Kiarostami

Ask me again next week and the bottom three will probably have changed.

Fair enough. But if so, then Alfred Hitchcock is British, full stop.

Agreed. Hitch matured into the Hitchcock most film geeks know and love while working in the Hollywood system, but he did some great work in Britain beforehand, more than most people seem to realize. I feel fully justified naming Hitch as a 'foreign' film director, and Kubrick as American.

To me, "foreign" means foreign-language.

Randomly (hope I'm not forgetting anyone):

Claude Chabrol
Andrei Tarkovsky
Michael Haneke
Gianni Amelio
Ingmar Bergman
Abbas Kiarostami
Claude Miller
Louis Malle
Nicholas Refn
Costa-Gavras
Krzysztof Kieslowski
Rainer Fassbinder
Francesco Rosi
Claude Goretta
Dardenne brothers
Bertrand Tavernier

Sorry, that's more than 5.
