TiVo debuts slimmed-down TV service

http://news.com.com/2100-1041_3-1000591.html?tag=fd_top

TiVo has introduced a scaled-down version of its service that consumer-electronics makers can embed into other devices such as DVD players.

Known as TiVo Basic, the service includes the key digital video recording functions available in the company's full service, including the ability to pause live TV programs and record them onto a hard drive.
Interesting stuff. Hit the link for the full article.

Sounds expensive for something slimmed-down.

I'm just waiting for the day when we get a full TiVo/DVD recorder in one. If a slimmed down TiVo/DVD player cost this much, I'd hate to see what the full version would be!

That is what I have been waiting for - the DVR/DVD-R machine. I always wondered why TIVO nor Replay never developed a until with a zip-type drive - where you can download an hour or 2 of programming on a disc.

Only a matter of time. From the article:
Devices with TiVo Basic will be upgradeable to the full TiVo service for $12.95 a month or $299 for the life of the device--TiVo's standard service charge.

I think I worded my initial response wrong: meant to say a full TiVo DVD+/-RW in one

Toshiba is preparing the first device using the new service--a product that combines a DVD player and 80GB hard drive along with the TiVo basic service. It is set to ship in August with a suggested price of $549--with no additional fee for the basic service.
Then:

The basic service is focused on consumer-electronics makers that want to combine TiVo with another function, Klugman said. Among the possible future devices are machines that combine TiVo abilities with a device that can record onto blank DVDs.
So, the recorder idea sounds like "a possibility". Just a matter of time, like you said.
