Saw Lilya-4-Ever and it's not so good
If you took all the sex, religion, and melodrama of Breaking the Waves, and artlessly re-made it as an after-school special, you'd have Lilya-4-Ever.
This Swedish film takes place mostly in the former soviet eastern europe. It's about a young girl who through a string of misfortune ends up being a prostitute.
While the two lead kids do a very good job, I thought the film was sub-par. Depressing and sad, I'd seen it all before, but done much better. I don't recomend it and would give it only a star and a half.

DVD Talk Platinum Edition
I liked it, a lot because of the lead, but also because of how cyclical it is. Instead of a progression from point A to B, it forms a nice rhythm (of desperation). Granted, the bookends of the movie aren't needed for effect as so much a release for the audience. But this sucker pulled me in well enough.
