Eurovision Song Contest 2003 !!!!
I guess that most of the Americans may have not heard of Eurovision Song Contest being held every year as a traditional social event among European countries (+Israel & Russia).
It will take place on May 24th in Riga.

Until fairly recently Britain has had a proud history at Eurovision but this year failed to score a single point!
I was out at the theatre last night when the contest took place and never watch it anyway! However, on the news today some people suggested that the "nul points" was some kind of "political" statement.... based on the snippet I heard I think it was more likely to do with the fact that the UK vocalist sounded distinctly out of tune!

You know, being reminded of this recently caused me to listen to some tracks by Dschingis Khan. Anyone remember them? Late 70s German-'historical epic' disco. Plus "Rasputin" by Boney M, as an added attraction.

THEY SUCKED. They couldn't even hold the tune. I'm glad that they didn't get a point. I was a little disappointed that Romania and Germany didn't do better, cause both those songs were pretty darned good.
Besides, when you consider that there are 26 countries and each country selects what they thought to be the best 10, then 16 of them are going to be left out.
If a country sends "amateur night" acts along, then how can it expect anyone to place them in the top 10/26? Britain got all it deserved with 0 points.
Oh, and did I say that Britain's act sucked?

I remember growing up in Ireland in the nineties, there was a period when Ireland kept winning year after year... then one year (1995?) a completely intolerable song, a not-eve-pubworthy sing-along thing called "Dreamin'" was somehow chosen to represent Ireland, and to the surprise of no-one, Ireland lost.
Whispers and murmers started, saying that the Irish Eurovision producers had deliberately chosen a horrible song, to avoid having to be saddled with the cost of staging the contest for another year!
The situation was brilliantly satirized in an episode of the sitcom "Father Ted", and it was all the funnier having seen it happen in real life...
Britain:
Haven't a fair few of Britain's acts sucked in recent years, trying to be "poppy" and "original" at the expense of being anyways good? Oh well, they may be the only nation to choose a RAP song to represent them - Love City Groove's "Love City Groove".
"In the morning, when the sun shines, down on your body... I know we're really makin' love now". Ah, such lyrics are truly representative of what British talent has to offer... really...
