DVDs and their regions (???)

Greetings DVD Peers,

Hello everyone! I have a question for the more knowledgable concerning the region of a DVD.

I'm an avid DVD shopper when it comes to anything Anime. I've been noticing (in recent ventures on Half.com) that many are asking "Is this DVD a Region 1?". Obviously this must carry some measure of importance so I'm wondering what is the significance.

Hypothesizing, I'd wager that Region 1 equates to those DVD release in these United States. Translating a Region 1 significance to whether or not the Anime has an English track or not. But that's just my guess and before I make the commitment to purchase one of these bad boys, I'd like to know for sure.

Thank you in advance for any and all help with my querry.

R1 is the US. DVDs from other regions (other than R0 - so-called 'region-free' - discs) will not play on unmodified US players. The US discs may or may not contain an English dubs.

(Region coding is ignored everywhere else)
