War and the Oscars. This is so stupid. Really! No "red carpet arrivals" announced !

I was watching E! News Live and they are saying that the red carpet arrivals at the Oscars have been canceled (thank God! A little less of Joan Rivers that I have to cringe at) because of security measures for the celebrities but :

I am sorry but the war topic coinsiding with the Oscar topic is so "mind blowingly stupifying" it is not even funny.

I understand the security measures, but this topic is getting more coverage than the actual "on thought of an actual war".

I could care less about the Oscars and I watch only to see who wins...which isn't that big of a reason, really.

But I am so tired of some people thinking that celebrities are so much more important than the number of troops overseas. It is ridiculous.

Oh no. We can't risk overly paid celebrities get bombed. We need the entertainment value!!!

Jeez.

Mods close this if you want (which I am pretty sure you will) . I just had to vent my opinions. I did add television notes, though so do what you will.

Who thinks that celebrities are more important than our troops?

And where are you seeing more coverage of the Oscars than on the war? If it's the E channel, then what would expect?

Otherwise, it's pretty much wall-to-wall coverage of the "liberation" of Iraq peppered with some redundant coverage of Elizabeth Smart and a bit on the Oscars and the the ridiculous anti-Dixie Chicks movement spreading across the country for flavor.

Just another example of Hollywood's dilusions of self-importance. I don't mind taking some overly sensitive security measures, but I agree with the disgust over how Hollywood frequently tries to twist world events (often tragedies) into publicity for their own personal grandstanding.

P.S. It should be noted that I care not about anything public they've said. I'm just damn tired of my boss playing their Landslide cover ad nauseum.

Well said guys..

It's funny...last nite I accidentally taped Punk'd on MTV so I decided to watch it..

The first victim was Frankie Muniz. They arranged it to look as if someone stole his $200,000 Porche from the valet.

That's NOT a typo. He's 16 and he owns a $200,000 Porche. Ashton himself said that it was ridiculous and when he was 16 he owned a 1986 baby blue Ford Escort.

The second one was Justin Timberlake. The scam on him was unpaid taxes. $900,000 I think. While the "IRS Agent" was going down a list of Justin's assets, they listed something like 10 cars, 4 Harleys, 3 houses, etc..

That is wrong on SO MANY LEVELS..

This is one of the things that bothered me about the 9/11 telethon..these people make more money than most small third world nations..and they have the NERVE to ask US to donate???

WRONG.

Things were supposed to be different after 9.11..people were supposed to reevaluate what was important and what wasn't..

Guess not..

Well, just bring your boss on over to Louisianna (don't tell him why) and I'm pretty sure they'll toss him into the fire where they are burning Dixie Chicks albums.

I see the point of being annoyed with celebrities acting like the are somehow all-knowing, but I don't see how you can gauge that by watching the E-channel or reading into the significance of them cancelling the red carpet ceremony.

The Oscars "might" offer some much needed distraction from the war. Unfortunately, the anti-war speeches will likely be unbearable and actually make me more likely to not watch much of it. I don't think an awards show is the place to speak about your political views.

Wear a "No War" button or one of Das Monkey's "I hate the Dixie Chicks" t-shirts and keep your mouth shut. But I'm glad they are going on with the show. Because if they cancel the Oscars, the terrorists win.

Not to bring levity and reason to this discussion, but the Oscars are watched by hundreds of million of people around the world. Imagine if you will, right before the show goes on a suicide bomber running into the fray and taking out a good chunk of Hollywood Blvd on national/international TV.

The attacks on the world trade center were staggered so that everyone around a TV would see that second plane hit. Regardless of the fact that celebrities are present, an attack that public, seen by the entire world live, would make an extra juicy target for a terrorist group with axe to grind.

I am in no way saying "these people need to die". I am just expressing my disgust at the treatment that these "stars" get.

No one even cared about the average joes that worked at the WTC towers until they were killed.

But "we" are all over the coverage of "security" at the Oscars, Emmys, etc as "we" have always been.

The news makes these celebs out like kings and queens.

You'd think in a state most notably considered as the place you'd least like to be accused of murder, that there would be more important things for people to do then getting rabid about what the "fat little dixie chick" said.

She's only a singer for god sakes. Those who burn her records make her more important than she is. And they waste their energy that could be better used on something that is really important.

Like changing the name of French fries to Freedom fries.

the dixie chicks are coming to the city in which I dwell soon.

I will be there protesting to the fullest.

Thank God Toby several months back. As well as George Strait earlier this year.

Real country artists.

Okay. That was off topic.

Don't waste all that time and energy "just" protesting the Dixie Chicks. While you're there you might as well burn an American flag too.

I'll leave the burning of the flag to the un-American chicks.

Oh, come on ... protestors are cool! The best thing about Ozzfest is all the people beating the streets outside telling me how much I'll enjoy my stay in Hell because I like metal. I usually thank them and ask if they'd like me to save them a seat.

I was just foolin' with the guy. The whole thing is silly, but some people honestly believe that taking the Dixie Chicks out of the rotation or bashing celebrities is somehow patriotic. I just think it's mean, whomever is being hurt.

Funny, that you mention Ozzy. I was thinking about him and AC/DC. I saw them both when I was in my teens back in the 80's. And back then you expected to hear rockers or any singers bashing the establishment. Ozzy would have said, "F*uck Bush!" and we would have screamed, "You rule, Ozzy!" No one would have cared if he meant it and Ozzy would have been too wasted to remember that he said it.

I didn't go to concerts and hope to hear informed opinions. I came to hear the music. I watch the Oscars cause I love the movies.

But Senor Das you must get past the Landslide phobia. The Dixie Chicks do rule and Natalie is way hot, despite having a mouth that is apparently as big as her appetite. If the Chicks come to Atlanta you're gonna have to let me get you some good seats. You can just plug your ears when they sing Lanslide.

Let me get this straight...

The red carpet entries are canceled because the organizers don't want to seem to be glamming it up while combat is happening, and fact that this is being covered by the news media means that celebrities are spoiled and out of touch?

If they had continued as planned, I'm sure everyone who is critical of them would take that in stride and not complain.

Does it strike anyone else as odd that people complaining about the celebrity culture are posting on a board about the entertainment industry? It just seems like if it bothers you so much, you wouldn't hang around here so much.

(And that's not a swipe, it's a simple observation.)

Wasn't this the same situation last year at the Oscar's after 9/11? Not that I care. I find the Oscar's to be a real bore and 99% of the films in Hollywood aren't worth watching.

You guys are all waaaaayyy off....

The cancellation of the red carpet has nothing to do with safety. It's more along the lines of showing some tact and not gushing about your outfit and getting your picture taken while there are Americans dying fighting in a war. They've also asked all of the celebs to dress in a 'business-like manner'. Kinda tacky if they went forward with the red carpet while a war is going on.

Here's an article from MSNBC. It's not about safety.

MSNBC

And as for celebs and their cars...Fox is making millions off Malcolm in the Middle...so is Justin Timberlake's record company. Should the stars who are milking the money for the business not be compensated as well?
