Everytime I come into one of these thread, I go
But I do download a few MP3's from a couple of artists from here to see if they strike my interest.
As of this thread, I am going to most of them.
I do know Cohen, Aalyiah, Outkast, and Blur

I bought:
"the beginning stages" by The Polyphonic Spree (been relying on mp3s of this group for too long, so I bought it to support them).
"Pieces of Africa" by The Kronos Quartet (so far, wonderful).

Most of what is listed is, imho, very good music. It's typically bands who care about music more than they car about being a "star."
If you haven't heard of one of these bands, then I'd suggest going to amazon.com or cdnow.com to play a sample of a few songs. If you like the sampling, then go further and read some reviews at places like pitchforkmedia.com, neumu.com, or even theonionavclub.com to see if others, who like this sort of music, enjoy that particular album you sampled from. Furthermore, most who list bands in these threads are open to replies questioning what they thing of the album, the band, or other recs in that particular thread or even email.
Looking at these threads is probably the best way to build a really stellar music collection.

I just want to echo Alyoshka's well-tempered comments. This thread has been very open to discussions of the artists and albums mentioned. I've discovered a number of artists thanks to this forum (and these threads in particular).
Reading through the list of artists and albums, I realize that it's a not very mainstream list (for the most part). I was intimidated to post my (generally more mainstream) lists -- for about a week. Then I realized that people were not going to say that I was stupid because I was listening to stupid CDs.
Sometimes this forum can get judgmental, but these threads are very open.
Just because an album is not mainstream doesn't make it good -- or bad.

The Malkmus album is a letdown, unfortunately. The Preston School of Industry disc is still the best post-Pavement release.
Today:
Killer Mike -- Monster
DFA Mix
Blood Brothers -- Burn Piano Island, Burn
A.R.E. Weapons -- A.R.E. Weapons
(those last two records are my early No. 1 and No. 2 albums for 2003)
