Review wanted of Hero R0 Jet Li

This dvd may or may not be butchered by disney/miramax in some way, so I wanted to get the dvd now so I don't have to worry about that yet

Sorry, don't know if it's anamorphic but I just watched this disc (the mainland version) yesterday with some friends and the transfer and sound is excellent - watched it on a 50" projection 4x3 TV w/ TV speakers. Not exactly the best HT set-up (I don't like projection TVs much), so I was impressed by how it looked and sounded even with that.

Subs are decent, although the prologue and epilogue text aren't subtitled.

Enjoyed the movie - looking forward to the extended version when it's released.

The version shown in theaters and currently on DVD is the Miramaxed version. However, the director made the cuts himself so its not as bad as what they would've done.

After seeing the current version. I can't imagine the extended version doing anything but dragging the movie. The pacing is really good and doesn't seem like anything more is needed for the story or characters.

I agree! I am content with the 98 (?) minute version. Sure, I'll watch the Director's cut eventually but I have a feeling that I'll watch the "miramaxed" version more frequently.

If you have a multiregional dvd player there is a preorder for a new HK version at dvdshelf (R6 maybe?). It is anamorphic and has DTS. I haven't heard how good the video transfer is but I'm betting its just fine.

This is a one great flick IMO!

I'm confused. Is this made by Miramax? I wouldn't have thought they'd had any control over cuts to it.

Actually, it's just to be distributed by Miramaxe. It wasn't made by them.

The Region 3 HK release just came out in a 2 disc set from Edko with some nice supplements and subtitles, especially the opening and ending.

Just because a company has a credit in the film doesn't always mean that they had any hand in the production. Straight from IMDB.com:

Production Companies
Beijing New Picture Film Co. [cn]
Elite Group Enterprises [hk]

Distributors
Beijing New Picture Film Co. [cn] (China)
Columbia TriStar Italia [it]
EDKO Film Ltd. [hk] (Hong Kong)
Miramax Films [us] (North America/Latin America/UK/Australia/Africa/Italy)
Universal Pictures [us]

I'm holding the Hong Kong DVD in my hands right now and as I'm reading it in Chinese, the DVD box says it's co-produced by Miramax. i also have a mainland copy which basically says the same thing.

The review does make Hero sound awesome. But can anyone offer to explain why it didn't win the freaking oscar for foreign film? Because crouching tiger hidden dragon, another Chinese film (Taiwanese director), won last year? Gonna finally get a chance to watch Hero on DVD this Fri.

Apparently, the voters thought Nowhere in Africa was a better movie. Crouching Tiger won 2 years ago. Last year, No Man's Land won over Amelie.

Wow, so the academy and everyone else had enough holicaust on the spot so now they want to look at something fresh and hasn't been brought up before; Germany Jews who got word Hitler will kill 'em all so they split to Kenya before shed happened. Facinating. This I have to see... wonder if block buster will carry it? Maybe.

Or maybe everything's just a popularity contest.

I have the Mainland China DVD-5 and Hong Kong 2 disk set. The Hong Kong one is a great set. If you actually care for my thoughts on them.

http://www3.sympatico.ca/patrik/hero2.html (2 disk set)

Dunno when the extended version will come out but I'm sure it'll be even better. Hopefully it'll be soon enough.
