HBO's Unchained Memories:Readings From The Slave Narratives. Deeply moving

This is a HBO presentation that features noted actors/actresses reading statements of former slaves freed after the civil war. The stories they told are historical golden nuggets absolutely heartfelt. You will not hear or read what is presented in the average history textbook.

A must see for lovers of Ken Burns documentary "The Civil War". This presentation gives another perspective.

It airs tonight at 11:30pm central on HBO 501
Feb 27, 2003 2:30am Central on HBO 504

I am just reading a book on Africa, and it is talking about slavery right now starting in the late 1500's and it mentions that during the height of the slave trade, 60K/year were being brought to the USA, and even in the later part of the 19th Century it was still 30K / year being 'exported' from Africa

Very powerful stuff. I'm proud to be an American and proud to be a Southerner, but sometimes it's hard not to collapse under the weight of knowing what people were capable of at one time.
