Excellent film - easily my favorite Scorsese work. Very approachable depiction of crime and criminals. To me, it's that you can become so wrapped up in the film's characters and settings, without the need for a standard traditional narrative, that makes the film so awesome. Excellent soundtrack choices, excellent acting, and Scorsese's style here is a great example of a director distinguishing HIS film from others. There's a purpose for his stylistic decisions, it's not just "Let's do one long continuous tracking shot, cause we can." There is depth to Henry Hill's journey and it is really a journey that we ourselves take. Much like Willard's plunge into the depths of madness in "Apocalypse Now", Henry's absorption into the illegal and brutally violent is one that we follow first-hand, the fascinating allure of evil and crime. Compared to something like Pulp Fiction, I find Goodfellas infinitely more satisfying a film in the way it treats its characters and crime.

At its heart, though, it is the story of one person growing up and deciding a life path, and that to me, is inherently interesting. The finale is strong and hard-hitting, and it's really a wonderful ride to get there. It's an injustice, no doubt, that this lost the Oscar to "Dances with Wolves", but fortunately, I see that a lot of people don't expect the Oscars to reward the worthy.

Sorry for the (most likely) incoherent ramblings, but that's my contribution. I like this one.

Goodfellas is a great movie. I don't like the dvd because halfway through you've got to flip the disc over and it breaks the momentum. This movie really grabs my attention as soon as it begins and puts me in a trance till the very end.

That's easy.... MASTERPIECE !!

I still remember the first time I saw it. Probably 10 minutes into the movie I absolutely knew I was seeing something really special !!

Like most everyone who's seen it, I'm desperately waiting for an SE to be released.

I needed something between "filth" and a "very good film." I don't worship like many people and don't even care for it that much, so "very good film" is too high for me. But I by no mean feel it's terrible. It is a decent film, but nothing I really ever care to see again.

Unlike The Deer Hunter, I can sit through this entire film.

A Masterpiece.

Masterpiece. The scene when Henry is running away after torching the cars and Scorcese freezes the shot as Liotta explains how some neighborhood kids carried his moms groceries home "outtaa respect" is amazing. Something about the deliveries of tht anecdote just had me near tears. Great film.

A Masterpiece. This is the one Martin Scorcese should've won Oscar for (I think Dances With Wolves, which I liked at the time, but has aged TERRIBLY won).

I almost bought the DVD again today, but I'm holding out still for a non-flipper.

I've enjoyed this more each time I've seen it. I wasn't nuts about it the first time but it continues to grow on me.

Will this be locked too?

Anyway, I thought it was a great movie. A perfect mix of drama and dark comedy.

Scorcese at his best!..I love the introduction of all the mafioso's in the bar..

The steady cam shot through the restauarant has been copied (or tried too) so many times by others but this one is still the best..

So many great performances too!

I just watched Goodfellas for first time today. All I can say is that I couldn't agree with you all more, simply a superb film. Best Scorsese film I have seen.

Masterpiece? I won't go that far, but I do believe it's a very, very good film. Raging Bull is easily much better than Goodfellas, although I would rate it up with Taxi Driver on my "Best Scorsese" list.

The main problem I saw was that it really seems to drag on, especially towards the end--which may have actually been the point, but the most interesting aspects of the film were Henry Hill's relationships with his mafioso buddies--and when they disappeared and Henry was a drug runner, it just seemed that something more was "missing" from the film.

Call me a DeNiro and Pesci homer, but that's just my opinion.

Reading the book right now that the movie was based on, great book so far. You get to read the little details about all the different scenes in the movie.

Great movie, but come on.. whoever said it was better or even close to the godfather is wayyyy off.

One of the best films of the 90s.
